Hatchbacks to Look Out for in 2020
SEAT Mii electric
Expected release date: February 2020
Why we love it: It’s sleek, it’s stylish and it’ll be one of the most affordable electric cars on the market, with a motor that produces 156 lb-ft of torque (equivalent to some turbocharged petrol engines).
Things to consider: In comparison to other electric vehicles, it isn’t a standout car in terms of features (but you’ll get a lot for your money).
As SEAT’s first all-electric car, the compact SEAT Mii electric will boast an updated dashboard with smartphone integration, 16-inch alloy wheels and ambient lighting. Between charges, the car will have a range of up to 161 miles and, once flat, can be recharged up to 80% within an hour (when plugged into a CCS 40kW DC fast-charger). With parking sensors, lane assist and traffic sign recognition, it’s got all the safety features you’d expect from a modern car – and it’s great to look at too.

Vauxhall Corsa and Corsa-e
Expected release date: January 2020 (Corsa) / April 2020 (Corsa-e)
2019 Vauxhall Corsa
Why we love it: Sporty yet comfortable, this well-rounded supermini comes packed with a range of new features for a reasonable price.
Things to consider: At £26,000, the e-Corsa (electric version) will be considerably more expensive than the petrol or diesel versions (although it should cost you less to run).
With less weight, combined with better fuel economy and handling, the new 2020 Vauxhall Corsa will be a strong contender against cars like the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208. Despite its compact size, the fifth-generation vehicle comes with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine (or 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine if you prefer) for just £15,550.
Whilst the SE model features 16-inch alloy wheels and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the sportier SRi comes with tinted windows, a sport mode and rear parking sensors. Arriving slightly later in April 2020, the Corsa-e will boast a 50kWh battery pack, 134bhp electric motor, automatic emergency braking and intelligent speed control. It can also charge from 0-80% in 30 minutes with a 100kW rapid charger.

Volkswagen Golf Mk8
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: An eco-efficient and familiar choice for those who aren’t quite ready to go electric.
Things to consider: The buttons and control dials on the dashboard are all touch-operated, which some people may find difficult to get used to.
With low running costs and emissions, the new 2020 Volkswagen Golf MK8 is expected to produce only 10g/km in CO2 emissions from its 2.0-litre engine. What’s more, if you opt for the GTE plug-in hybrid, then you’ll be able to travel 35 miles on just the electric motor. This new model will also boast a permanent internet connection, allowing the car to receive software updates wirelessly and show advanced 3D sat-nav mapping. It’ll also come equipped with Amazon Alexa built in.

Volkswagen ID.3
Expected release date: Summer 2020
Why we love it: This electric family hatchback comes with many compelling features, including some voice-activated functions and ‘ID. Light’ (which visually communicates how the car is functioning).
Things to consider: At 385-litres, the boot capacity isn’t competitive compared with other family cars (but more than adequate for most people).
Despite being the first car available to buy in the electric ID range, the 2020 Volkswagen ID.3 has already been nominated for an award – the 2020 What Car? Reader Award. Taller, wider and considerably more spacious than models like the Beetle and Golf, it sports 20-inch alloy wheels, boasts a smart gloss-black roof, and comes in three trim levels.
As the first in the ID series to launch, the mid-sizeID.3 will be kitted with a 58kWh battery for 261 miles of driving, and can be charged up to 155 miles at a rate of 100kW in half an hour. It’s also got plenty of safety features, including automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

SEAT el-Born
Expected release date: March 2020
Why we love it: This sporty-looking electric hatchback comes with driver assistance systems capable of controlling acceleration, deceleration and steering.
Things to consider: Some of the dashboard controls are touch-operated, which may be more difficult to operate when driving.
As SEAT’s first electric car, the new el-Born embodies what SEAT’s design chief Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos describes as their ‘emotional design language’.
Based on the Volkswagen ID.3, the spacious five-door hatchback is powered by a 62kWh battery and an electric motor producing 201bhp. It covers a range of up to 261 miles and can charge up to 80% from empty in just under 50 minutes (with a super-charger). As an appealing alternative to the Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf, the SEAT el-Born will be available from £28,000.

SUVs to Look Out for in 2020
CUPRA Formentor
Expected release date: Early 2020
Why we love it: As CUPRA’s first standalone model, the Formentor certainly feels exclusive.
Things to consider: A price hasn’t yet been revealed, but if it’s anything like the Ateca, then it’ll cost you around £35,000.
Offering 31-miles of pure-electric driving, this coupé-crossover plug-in hybrid is the first flagship model from SEAT’s newly-independent CUPRA brand. With its 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine and electric motor producing 242bhp, the new Formentor sports the qualities of an SUV whilst boasting high-speed performance. It’s sporty, sleek and effortlessly cool, with a distinctive front bumper, exaggerated wheel arches and carbon fibre-backed sports seats (certainly reminiscent of the SEAT Tarraco flagship SUV).
Learn more about the CUPRA Formentor.
Mercedes-Benz GLA
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: In line with larger SUV models, the second-generation GLA offers plenty of headroom and legroom for all passengers.
Things to consider: Plug-in hybrid and electric versions of the new GLA won’t be available until later in the year.
Following the launch of the original GLA five years ago, the second-generation GLA comes with LED headlights and taillights and a roofline that’s 10cm higher than the A-Class on which it’s based (meaning that there’s more headroom for passengers). From a 7-inch ‘MBUX’ infotainment screen to a built-in sat nav and cruise control, the 2020 GLA offers a varied range of tech features. Most exciting of all, however, is the inclusion of semi-autonomous driving technology, with many features coming as standard.
Learn more about the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
Mercedes-Benz GLB
Expected release date: Early 2020
Why we love it: In terms of flexibility, there aren’t many cars that rival this family-friendly SUV.
Things to consider: At nearly 1.7 tonnes and square in shape, the 2020 GLB doesn’t feel like the most aerodynamic car in the world.
The ideal family-friendly car, this stylish compact SUV is set to offer a range of flexible features, including ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation, dual-zone climate control and Active Brake Assist.
Based on the same platform as the A-Class and B-Class, the 2020 GLB can be kitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (with cheaper petrol and diesel options also available), whilst the ‘Off Road’ driving mode and permanent all-wheel drive system will help you tackle tougher terrain. You’ll be able to enjoy all of the GLB’s features from £31,000.
Learn more about the new Mercedes GLB.
Mazda CX-30
Expected release date: January 2020
Why we love it: You get a great deal for your money – style, luxury and premium-feel features in abundance.
Things to consider: Although the coupé-like design is attractive, the fast-sloping roof at the back could limit visibility through the rear window.
From £28,875, the new Mazda CX-30 offers an exceptional range of premium-feel features at a reasonable price point. In terms of safety, the Mazda i-Activsense system is a cut above the rest, with automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning and more.
Most remarkable of all is the Driver Attention Alert system, which uses an infrared camera and LEDs to detect how tired the driver is and alert them accordingly. The more costly fuel system is also pretty unique – the SkyActiv-X four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine compresses fuel and air just like a diesel.
Learn more about the all-new Mazda CX-30.
Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: The swooping roofline makes for a dynamic silhouette and an interesting twist on the original SUV.
Things to consider: The new GLE Coupé will only be available as a diesel at launch, with a 2.9-litre six-cylinder engine.
Sturdy yet sporty, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé is set to be one of the most practical cars in its class. Already available as an SUV, the 2020 premium 4×4 will come with sports seats, Active Braking Assist and 650-litres of boot space. The two dashboard-mounted displays are particularly large at 12.3-inches, with Amazon Music being one of many things you can operate through the touchscreen. Although prices are yet to be revealed, you can expect the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé to cost around £66,000.
Learn more about the Mercedes GLE Coupé.
Audi e-tron Sportback
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: As Audi’s second electric SUV, the e-tron Sportback will boast a maximum range of 278 miles (with the larger 95kWh battery pack).
Things to consider: It offers slightly less headroom and boot space than its sibling, with a loss of 45-litres from the boot (however, storage is still more than adequate).
A rare rival for the Jaguar I-Pace, the 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback can cover up to 278 miles (with the larger 95kWh battery pack) thanks to its aerodynamic shape and rear-wheel drive capabilities. It also boasts two electric motors and regenerative braking, helping to maximise the range. Furthermore, charging the battery from 0-80% (at a rate of 150kW) takes just 40 minutes. We’re sold.
For a sportier look and feel, the S line trim will add 20-inch wheels, sports air suspension and a smart gloss-black exterior.

Land Rover Defender
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: This revered 4×4 has been completely transformed compared to its predecessors, with a 95% new platform.
Things to consider: This renewed Defender will cost you at least £35,000.
Whilst some pre-existing models have simply had a facelift, the 2020 Land Rover Defender has been completely transformed with an entirely new platform (called D7x), advanced tech and an increased size. Available with three or five doors, the new 4×4 Defender is available with different specs and engines, including a 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine. A four-cylinder plug-in hybrid will arrive later in 2020.
It also boasts a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, smartphone app integration and over-the-air software updates as a convenient addition.
Learn more about the new Land Rover Defender.
Aston Martin DBX
Expected release date: Summer 2020
Why we love it: Dynamic and luxurious, this supercar features a tweaked engine that produces 542bhp of power and a hefty engine sound that comes from its unique cylinder firing order.
Things to consider: The DBX comes with a £158,000 price tag – quite pricey for a family SUV!
Perfectly combining the versatility of an off-road vehicle with the dynamics of a sports car, the new Aston Martin DBX is finally emerging onto the market in 2020 after four years in the making. As Aston Martin’s first SUV release, it certainly doesn’t disappoint, with all-wheel drive, an AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and electric anti-roll control for precise suspension control. Although the engine is the same as in the DB11 V8 and Vantage, it now boasts up to 542bhp of power and 516lb-ft of torque.
Appearance-wise, it sports ultra-thin headlights, an aerodynamic body design and a luxurious leather interior.
Learn more about the Aston Martin DBX.
Audi RS Q8
Expected release date: Spring 2020
Why we love it: Sporty and agile, this updated SUV comes with a mild hybrid system that helps to save fuel.
Things to consider: The RS Q8 retains the sloping roofline of the Q8 base car, meaning headroom for rear passengers isn’t great.
A strong contender against the Range Rover Sport SVR, this high-performance SUV is kitted with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine, which produces an impressive 592bhp. Visually, not much has changed since its predecessor, but it does come with carbon fibre trimming and the option of 23-inch wheels. Inside, buyers will benefit from massaging sports seats and a 10.1-inch infotainment system.
Learn more about the Audi RS Q8.
Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge
Expected release date: Early 2020
Why we love it: It’s absurdly luxurious, with a gloss-black paint exterior that’s been applied, cured and polished ten times to achieve its exceptional appearance.
Things to consider: As one of the most luxurious SUVs that money can buy, this might be a car for the wishlist!
The definition of luxury, the sleek Rolls-Royce Cullinan is being refreshed for 2020 with gloss-black paint, styling tweaks and extra power. This special Black Badge edition vehicle features 22-inch forged alloy wheels, a new black chrome ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ mascot and red brake callipers, further heightening its sophistication. It comes with a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine, producing 592bhp and 900Nm of torque.
Most impressive of all is its Starlight Headliner on the interior roof, with 1,344 fibre optic cables creating a striking starry sky effect.
Learn more about the Black Badge Cullinan.
Coupés to Look Out for in 2020
Porsche Taycan
Expected release date: Mid 2020
Why we love it: This 279-mile range luxury sedan is more aerodynamic than a Porsche 911.
Things to consider: It’s not the quickest to charge and will cost you over £116,000.
On par with the 761hp Tesla Model S P100D, this brand new all-electric vehicle will be coming onto the market in 2020 with the 750-hp Turbo S and 670-hp Turbo models.
The Turbo S will produce 774 lb-ft of torque, whilst the Turbo comes slightly behind with 626 lb-ft of torque. Even for this ultra-luxe sedan, this is quite remarkable.
In terms of charging power, a 50kW fast charger will give you 80% worth of power in 90 minutes. Not the fastest, but worth it for the power you’ll get out of the car. Inside, the vehicle has been kitted with Porsche’s first vegan interior.

Estates to Look Out for in 2020
Audi RS 6 Avant
Expected release date: Early 2020
Why we love it: It’s fierce in performance and appearance, with a spacious interior and 565-litres of boot space.
Things to consider: Apart from the front doors, roof and tailgate, everything else on its body has changed since the previous Audi RS 6A6.
If a car could be a supervillain, then the 2020 Audi RS6 Avant would be perfectly suited to the role. With its new powerdome bonnet, distinctive gloss-black grille and large wheel arches framing 21-inch alloy wheels, it’s certainly got a strong façcade – and even stronger specs.
As Audi’s fourth version of the high-performance supercar, the 2020 RS 6 will boast a twin-turbo V8 (delivering 600hp and four-wheel drive), 590 lb ft of torque, an efficient 48V mild-hybrid system and adaptive RS air suspension.
Learn more about the Audi RS 6 Avant.
Saloons to Look Out for in 2020
Bentley Flying Spur
Expected release date: Early 2020
Why we love it: It might be recognised for its extravagant features and sophisticated Bentley styling, but its high-performance 6.0-litre W12 engine steals the show.
Things to consider: In Sport mode, the gear shifts can sometimes be slightly rougher than other modes.
Elegant and refined, the Bentley Flying Spur is predominantly used for chauffeur-driving. However, if you have £165,000 spare, then the new 2020 model – with all its exceptional features – could be yours. As the sibling of the Continental GT, this third-generation luxury saloon features the signature Bentley ornament on the bonnet (retractable of course), 22-inch wheels and an interior decked in wooden veneers and leather. It also offers a 360-degree camera, auto-park functionality and ample amounts of legroom for rear passengers (thanks to its 3,195mm wheelbase). The real standout feature, however, is its 6.0-litre W12 engine, which produces an outstanding 626bhp and 664 pound-feet of torque.
Learn more about the Bentley Flying Spur.
Vans to Look Out for in 2020
Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 and e-Transporter
Expected release date: March 2020
Why we love it: Like a car in disguise, the 2020 Transporter T6.1 is packed with plenty of safety and driving features.
Things to consider: Compared to the 1400kg carrying capacity of something like the Vauxhall Vivaro, the new Transporter T6.1 is expected to carry less at 1278kg.
From the outside, the new Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 doesn’t look that different from its predecessor. However, plenty has changed on the inside, with an updated dashboard, infotainment system and improved safety tech, including parking assist, electro-mechanical steering and crosswind assist.
An electric version will be added to the range too, with the single battery models (38.8kWh) lasting up to 134 miles, whilst the twin battery models (77.8kWh) will have a range of up to 250 miles. If you’re interested in the e-Transporterelectric version, then you can expect to charge the battery from 0-80% in 49 minutes with a 40kW charger.
