A new Tesla Model S can now drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco on a single charge

Tesla has announced that it has expanded the range of its Model S vehicle to 370 miles and Model X to 325 miles on a single charge — extending the array of its flagship car to make the trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco on a single charge. 

The extensions beat Tesla’s previous records for mileage per charge using the exact same 100 kWh battery pack, the company said.

The company also announced upgrades and a new adaptive suspension system to its Ludicrous Mode.

Both models now have the drive unit technology, Tesla said. Combining silicon carbide power electronics an optimized permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor and enhanced lubrication, equipment designs and heating, bearings the cars can reach greater than 93% efficiency, Tesla said in a statement.

By pairing a permanent magnet motor at the front with an induction motor in the trunk gives both models better performance times adding up to a 10% improvement in range — offering bidirectional performance advantages as energy flows from the battery during acceleration and back into the battery through regenerative braking.

The company also declared quicker charging on V3 and V2 Superchargers of 200 kW and 145 kWwhich should the time it takes to recharge the automobiles.

Improvements to the suspension will also be helping to boost performance. The company added fully adaptive damping giving a much better feel on the highway or in mode to the car.

Tesla contains algorithms that predict how damping would need to be adjusted based on speed, road conditions, and “ automobile and driver inputs ” and touts its suspension software was developed in-house, according to a statement.

By enhancing the system ’ s ability to level — maintaining the car lower into the floor the models also reduce drag. As a thank you for customers that wish to purchase the Tesla models, the company said it would throw in a Ludicrous Mode upgrade for no additional charge.
