A mini sledgehammer was taken to a Tesla Model 3’s screen, completely shattering it. Everything about the Model 3 is controlled via the touchscreen, which in principle makes the stunt a little dangerous. While it is definitely recommended that this not be replicated by anyone else, the results might be of interest to Telsa owners that find themselves, for more natural reasons, without a screen.
The Tesla Model 3 is an all-electric state-of-the-art sedan with plenty of bells and whistles. Built from the ground up for safety and efficiency, the Model 3 can drive up to around 350 miles on a single charge, which isn’t as good as the Model S. These cars are known for being futuristic in every way, and that includes how they are driven and function. Inside a Model 3, for example, the driver will find a 15-inch touchscreen display that can control everything from the mirrors to opening the glove box. Essentially, anything that normally has a physical button within a combustion-driven vehicle can be controlled by the Model 3’s touchscreen.

So, what happens if the touchscreen were to break mid-drive? While a normal person would probably Google it, TechRax tested it out for themselves. On an abandoned road somewhere in California, TechRax destroyed the screen with a mini sledgehammer. After withstanding a surprising amount of hits from the hammer, the screen eventually starting splitting. Once enough glass had come off, the touchscreen started displaying RGB flashes and after the screen had come completely off, the car continued to drive. The video shows TechRax stopping off and getting out of the car, curious to see if the car would start again after exiting and re-entering. It did, and without any issues, other than the painfully obvious lack of a display.
It would seem that the display doesn’t do any actual processing. This means that any input or touch is registered through the display and that data is then sent through to the main processing unit of the Model 3. Therefore, if the display is removed, the Model 3’s ability to process new information is gone, leaving it in whatever setting it was in. Or is it? There are actually a few backups – or extra comforts – for this sort of thing. First, gear shifting can be accomplished with the lever that sticks out from behind the wheel. At one point in the video, after turning the car back on, TechRax switches into reverse with the lever, completely absolving any need for the touchscreen. A second way of controlling the vehicle is through the Tesla app, which basically does everything the touchscreen can.
Through a combination of the gear lever and Tesla control app, the touchscreen isn’t necessary. Of course, that doesn’t mean it should be ripped off. In cases where something like this might happen more naturally, the video highlighted that the cost of the repair was $1,500, which isn’t that much when taking into consideration the average cost of a Tesla repair. It’s good to know that the car can still drive if something were to happen to the display, keeping in line with Tesla’s commitment towards safety.
