Technology giant Apple confirmed that it’s acquired Drive.AI startup, a self-driving firm that runs a little fleet of evaluation shuttles at Texas.

Information of Apple being interested in buying Drive.AI surfaced earlier this month, with the firm considering bringing aboard a few of its technology talent in order to boost their own self-driving attempts.

Reuters reports that Drive.AI had been struggling, telling California regulators that it had been intending to lay off 90 individuals. Apple buying Drive.AI inside this nation is a common transfer to get Silicon Valley, in which larger companies acquire smaller start ups mostly to employ their own engineers.

Drive.AI is now conducting a fleet of autonomous trucks in Arlington and Frisco, Texas, together with the evaluation vehicles having fixed pickup and drop-off locations. No info regarding how much money Apple paid for Drive.AI was released.

Last year Apple has revamped its efforts in the growth of autonomous driving technologies, employing Tesla engineering leader Doug Field to oversee more than 5,000 employees on the job.

Back in January, Apple cut 200 workers from the program. A company spokesperson said back then: &ldquoWe have an incredibly talented team focusing on platforms and technologies at Apple. Since the team focuses on their work on many regions for 2019, several groups are moved into projects in different areas of the company, where they will support machine learning and other endeavors, across all of Apple”.

Apple’s self-driving division is also occupied with developing components, such as sensors, besides scouting for suppliers.
