Boring Co’s “Loop Lift” elevator and tunnel concept are coming to life at SpaceX site

Elon Musk’s vision to get an electric-powered elevator which would transfer vehicles to and from a network of cost-effective, high-speed underground tunnels is quickly taking shape around SpaceX’s Hawthorne, CA headquarters.

The Boring Company released new images revealing a freshly painted tunnel in white along with a rotating shaft that’s been assembled to a private lot at 120th Street and Prairie Avenue, approximately at the halfway stage of the tunneling startup’s underground 2-mile test tunnel. Dubbed O’Leary Station later Patrick O’Leary, a 13-year SpaceX veteran who participates in 2017 to eventually become Structures Engineering Designer for The Boring Company, the location a part of a proof-of-concept that intends to demonstrate the efficacy of decreasing vehicles to transportation systems, perhaps directly from a vehicle owner’s residence garage.

It’s all part of Musk’s grander vision to cancel “soul-destroying visitors ”, where individuals either push their vehicles or are reduced into underground tunnels at Urban Loop pods then transported at high speed on skates. Before gaining consent from Hawthorne’s town council for the building of some “Loop Lift” garage-elevator system at the SpaceX-adjacent testing grounds,” The Boring Company highlighted the progress of development for its underground, electric transportation system by sharing a video of some Tesla Model X being whisked off underground.

The tunneling startup began construction of a tunnel entrance located directly across the street from SpaceX headquarters – Crenshaw Boulevard – at 2017. Not long after, a video demonstrating that a Tesla being lowered to the floor and images revealing continued evolution of the tunnel walls pointed towards rapid progress at the evaluation website. More to the point, ongoing research and development from the project might pave the way for future projects across the U.S., since the company appeared to secure regulatory approval for city-scale projects in major metros like Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.

Updated October 21, 2018: Shortly after we published that story, Elon Musk took to Twitter to affirm that The Boring Company is near end of its first tunnel and will soon be holding a Boring Co. opening event on Monday, December 10, 2018

The Boring Company’s recently shared photographs are a good indicator that the numerous elements in its proof-of-concept job are beginning to come together. The picture of the 20-plus-ft-in-diameter hole in the floor, or tunnel shaft, is at exactly the identical residential location at which Teslarati photographers Pauline Acalin along with Tom Cross recently spotted excavation occurring . The location, now known to be O’Leary Station, is going to be the website for The Boring Company’s “garage-elevator” concept, as well as a more suitable stage accessibility for maintenance and eventually the permanent removal of tunnel boring machine (TBM) segments.

The concept elevator when complete won’t be open to people but instead used as an internal testbed for moving vehicles out of the personal home, which the company acquired. Cars would enter the tunnel from the SpaceX campus near Crenshaw Boulevard, proceed through the tunnel and on to the garage at O’Leary Station then back .

“It’s an increasingly important part of the longer-term vision the provider is hoping to build,” stated The Boring Company spokesperson Jane Labanowski.

Before and after pictures of the underground tunnel, which is utilized to zip vehicles on platforms powered by electric motors, reveal a freshly painted interior wall .

The Boring Company seems to extend its tunneling project to the west side of Los Angeles and use learnings from its evaluation tunnel and streamline the procedure for tube construction. Unlike conventional underground tunnels such as passenger vehicles, Boring Co.’s tunnels will be able to sustain a vacuum in order to support Hyperloop transport . Lowering the tunnel diameter by 50 percent will also reduce the cross-sectional area of the tube with a factor of four.

Musk noted in his address at TED2017 that having a smaller tunnel just large enough to get a vehicle will cut 75% of the time associated with digging, hence introducing substantial cost savings. The Boring Company’s tunnel boring machine may also seem to set up tunnel walls while it stinks, thus eliminating the requirement to pause operations and speeding up the procedure entirely.
