Collaboration in Times of Need

Ford Motor Company is known for stone like the GT500, burly trucks like the F-250 Super Duty, and daily drivers like the Ford Escape using its storage capability and car-like gas mileage.

On a more technologically advanced front, Ford even recently moved to the fully electric car market with the debut of its Mach-E SUV, a similar layout to the Tesla Model X.

But prior to 2020, an individual would’t never envisioned Ford collaborating with 3M, GE Healthcare, and the medical sector generally, but today they have.

Collaboration using Unlikely Partners

In the past, I’ve discussed the significance of collaborating with your opponents to locate success together. While Ford is not a direct competitor to 3M and GE Healthcare, prior to the global pandemic there wasn’t a demand for them to collaborate. But given the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19, ” the novel Coronavirus, those three powerhouses in their industries have partnered up to build respirators, ventilators, and face guards for hospitals that were running short on gear nationally.

This global outbreak has shown us that now more than ever, and particularly as we conquer this outbreak of the Coronavirus, cooperation in improbable scenarios unlocks the door to not only move your business from success to significance, it provides several important advantages that competition and closed-mindedness can’t maybe provide–advantages that are now critical to importance in a world characterized by exponential shift every single day.

Shared Skills and Resources

Collaborating with other businesses and people –even people you might consider completely out of your industry–can prove a highly effective approach in meeting and overcoming the challenges of today’s marketplace or perhaps something as deep as the global emergency we are currently experiencing.

To compare this on my own Anticipatory Organization Model, if implementing an anticipatory mindset, you look closely at the Hard Trends that are shaping the future both inside and out of your industry and also the Soft Trends, or a trend that we’re able to alter, of the outbreak and how it impacts society. Collaborating out of your industry to band together and wage that this terrible warfare is using a Soft Trend at a time of need.

With a collaboration, particularly an inter-industry collaboration, organizations can use shared resources, creativity, and other means with which solutions can be identified in significantly less time and with greater cost-efficiency.

This is especially true with regard to the shortage of respirators people ’ve faced during the beginning of this outbreak. Not only was the United States running out of physical space from hospitals, as we found in New York City, however if hospitals had the space, they were running out of ventilators. Time was of the essence, and one manufacturing firm didn’t have the ability to achieve this task independently.

This underscores the dynamics of collaboration. A choice to collaborate can overcome challenges and barriers that may otherwise be insurmountable.

Are You Collaborating or Cooperating?

Outside of the outbreak, traditionally what’s attracted collaboration to a greater light is the expanding speed of transformational invention –not only shift, however game-changing digital disturbance. Given that ever-faster speed of transformation, collaboration was already a growing necessity oftentimes.

Traditionally, many organizations believe they’re collaborating when, in fact, theyrsquo;re simply cooperating. Because you have to you cooperate ; you collaborate because you wish to. Many may view Ford’s cooperation as more or less collaboration outside of its industry; could they make components if they didn&rsquo?

However, given the current scenario we face–not only the health care parts needed to treat patients, but also the massive sum of the national and international workforce being laid off, many of them without cover –Ford maintaining its doors open helps the cause and at the same time helps companies that are paying more time figuring out how to make the components Ford can easily build, in turn rewards their workers by keeping them working during these trying times.

Collaboration is tied to prosperity. It’s inclusive and expansivein times like we are facing.

Competing and cooperating with others can work fine under certain conditions, but in a market where the speed of innovation is imperative, it could be effective to collaborate and far more productive. Looked at the other wayit’s a way by which you use anticipation with a partner; listen to the Hard Trends that are impacting both your industry and ones much outside of your own; and also be optimistic disruptors, uncovering amazing new discoveries you never would have previously considered.

The Anticipatory Organization is really where your organization can move from success to significance by way of learning collaboration. To find out more about specific times when collaboration is crucial, have a look at the Anticipatory Organization Learning System to your organization.
