Dr. Anthony Fauci: American Companies Coming Forward To Produce What’s Needed Without Government Forcing Them

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS News on Sunday that American companies have been coming ahead to create the medical supplies required to fight the coronavirus with no government needing to induce them to achieve that.

“You mentioned in New York and what may be arriving there,” CBS News’ Margaret Brennan said. “The president also has tweeted Ford, GM, and Tesla have now been granted to create ventilators. There’s been this back and forth over whether the president actually has arranged companies or to not generate equipment that is mandatory. What have these companies agreed to perform, and when will professionals have what they require? ”

“Well, I mean I’m positive that you noticed, exactly what the president was saying is these organizations are currently coming forth on their own,” Fauci said. “And I believe that’s an outstanding spirit of this American soul of not needing to be coaxed. They’re stepping. ”

“Theyre making not merely masks, however PPEs, and now ventilators,” Fauci continued. “So also we ’ re seeing it already, in the beginning, and exactly what we re likely to be seeing , obviouslythere was an problem with examining. The testing now — a number of tests are available out there since the private companies have gotten involved. ”

TRANSCRIPT:

MARGARET BRENNAN: Doctor Anthony Fauci is the director in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH, and That’s where he or she joins us. Dr. Fauci, thank you for making the time for us.

DR. ANTHONY FAUCI: Good to be with you.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You simply – you heard that account from our Liz Palmer around Italy. Are we on exactly the same trajectory as Italy?

DR. FAUCI: No, not necessarily at all. I mean, obviously, things are unpredictable. You can’t create any definitive statement. But if you examine the dynamics of this outbreak in Italy, we don’t understand the reason why they’re suffering so terribly. But there’s a chance and a lot people believe that early on they did not shut out as well the input of infections that originated in China and came into various parts of the world. Among those things we did very early and very aggressively, the presidentyou understand, had place the travel restriction coming fromChina into the United States and most lately from Europe into the United States, since Europe is the new China. I don’t understand the reason why this is happening there to such an extent, however it is possible that once you get so many of these spreads outside, they propagate exponentially and you can never keep up with this tsunami, and I believe that’s what unfortunately our colleagues and our beloved friends in Italy are confronting. They’re quite competent. It isn’t they don’t even know what they do.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Yeah.

DR. FAUCI: I believe they have a scenario in which they’ve been so overwhelmed from the beginning they can’t play catch up. And in direct answer to your question, MARGARET, it is may be, and I hope and I think it’ll be the case, we will not be that way since we have from the beginning been able to place a small clamp onto it. We re likely to get struck. There’so no doubt about it. We view it in New York. New York is ter- is suffering. However, the sorts of mitigation issues that are going on at this time, what we’re seeing in this nation, this physical separation, in exactly the same time because we’re avoiding an influx of cases coming in, I believe that’s gont move a very long way to preventing us from getting in Italy.

MARGARET BRENNAN: This was.

DR. FAUCI: Correct.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Then it started spreading human to human. Is your virus mutating? Is it changing?

DR. FAUCI: Well, this is an RNA virus, Margaret. And it will mutate. The issue is so that folks dislike ’t get confused. Viruses commute- mutate with no substantial impact on its function. So I don’t have any doubt that it ’s mutating as all RNA viruses mutate. We have not seen so far any type of change since it’s possible that it might mutate and change a few of the ways that it works but we are keeping a very close eye on it. But we ’ re not likely to not pay attention to it, although we’ve not seen that yet. We re likely to follow it.

MARGARET BRENNAN: That’s quite important to emphasize there. You know, among the things that stood out this week in some of the briefings we heard from the White House, was this mentioned, particularly in the colleague, Ambassador Birx, that young people from Europe appeared to be affected in a way that was unexpected.

DR. FAUCI: Right.

MARGARET BRENNAN: And we heard from the CDC this week, 20 percent of those hospitalizations in this nation have been all between the ages of 20 and 44. Why–

DR. FAUCI: You’re completely –

MARGARET BRENNAN: –are young people getting affected this way as it wasn’t?

DR. FAUCI: You’re completely accurate. And you just nailed the issue that was critical that was important that people ’re looking closely at. You knowit appears like there s a major difference between that demography, as we call it, even out of China and that which we re seeing in Europe. Now, we must check at the young folks that are getting seriously ill from the European cohort and make sure it isn’t driven by the fact they have conditions because we understand that underlying terms, all bets are off. No matter if you have an underlying serious medical illness, how young you are, you re likely to potentially get into trouble. However, should they overlook ’t possess conditions, which is something we need to actually analyze concerning the reason we re seeing it here, however we still didn’t find it in China. So we re likely to look at this carefully.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You mentioned in particular New York and everything could be arriving there. The president also has tweeted Ford, GM and Tesla have now been granted to create ventilators. There’therefore been the back and forth on whether the president actually has arranged companies or to not generate equipment that is mandatory. What have these companies agreed to perform and when will professionals have what they require?

DR. FAUCI: Well, I mean, as yesterday in the press conference that- that I’m positive that you noticed, just what the president was saying is these organizations are coming forth on their own. And I presume that’s an outstanding spirit of this American soul of not needing to be coaxed. They’re stepping. Theyre making masks, however PPEs and ventilators. What we re going to be seeing, andand we re seeing it already, in the beginning there was an problem with examining. The testing – a number of tests are available out there since the private companies have gotten involved. The–

MARGARET BRENNAN: But such as the mayor of New York has stated this week He was likely to run out of equipment–

DR. FAUCI: Right.

MARGARET BRENNAN: –in a matter of two weeks.

DR. FAUCI: That’s accurate.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So when will medical- it is true he’ll run out?

DR. FAUCI: No, no.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Will the federal government get him what he needs?

DR. FAUCI: True, true to both of them. Allow me to explain.

MARGARET BRENNAN: OK.

DR. FAUCI: We had been at- in the task force meeting yesterdayand it had been quite apparent that the problem in New York was right on the front burner. And the situation is now the resources that are being marshaled are currently going to be more led to all those hotspots that need it. And obviously, that’s California, Washington state, and obviously, New York is the most ambitious hit. So not only is that it New York trying to get funds themselvesbut we re likely to be pouring it in from the national government. So it would be a mix of local and national. However, it s really, very apparent they are a really large priority.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You are the top infectious disease expert in the U.S. government. You said that you differed that a combination of two drugs, hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin combined might have the outcome he described to the public. They maybe could. Where- who’s the president listening ? And do you find a concern here that these drugs could become, you know, basically oversubscribed and there might be a lack that desire those and could impact those who have issues such as lupus?

DR. FAUCI: OK. So, MARGARETthere’s a problem here of where we all now ’re coming out. The presidentas noticed, as we all have heard, what are what I call anecdotal reports that specific drugs function. What he had been hoping to perform and express was the expectation that should they let might work and push on their usage. I have stated I’m not disagreeing with the truth anecdotally they might work but my job is to establish definitively from a perspective that they do function. So I had been taking a medical perspective and the president was hoping to bring hope to those people. I believe there s of attempting to separate the two people this issue. Additionally, there isn’t a difference there. He also ’s coming out of it.

MARGARET BRENNAN: OK.

DR. FAUCI: I’m arriving out of it from a scientific perspective.

MARGARET BRENNAN: And we all wish you the ideal. Thank you very much, Doctor.

DR. FAUCI: Good to be with you.
