Elon Musk Confirms Tesla AI Day Happening Soon: What You Need To Know

Tesla fans, get ready for another event from the company happening soon. Elon Musk recently announced on Twitter that ‘Tesla AI Day’ will be taking place within the next month, suggesting there will be updates on where Tesla stands with Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and more.

While this is the first AI Day Tesla has ever announced, it follows a similar pattern of the company hosting small, focused events about once per year. In 2020, for example, Tesla Battery Day was where Tesla announced it was developing new, custom batteries that would improve range and performance. Tesla Autonomy Day took place in 2019, with Tesla using that event to showcase its Full Self-Driving technology and a concept car without a steering wheel.

Fast forward to 2021, and the next Tesla event will be AI Day. In his tweet announcing the event, Musk says, “Looking at holding Tesla AI Day in about a month or so. Will go over progress with Tesla AI software & hardware, both training & inference.” With Musk tweeting this on June 21, AI Day will likely take place sometime in late July.

That’s exciting and all, but what can folks actually expect from Tesla AI Day? Given the name of the event and Musk’s above tweet, artificial intelligence will clearly be the focus. Musk has continued to claim that Full Self-Driving will achieve level 5 autonomy by the end of 2021, and with the end of the year quickly approaching, an update on where the company stands here would be great to see.

While some type of update on Full Self-Driving is expected,  any major reveals or unveiling aren’t anticipated. At the end of his tweet, Musk notes that the purpose of AI Day “is recruiting.” Furthermore, replying to a tweet from Tesla’s Director of AI (Andrej Karpathy) just before announcing AI Day, Musk says, “In general, anyone interested in working on physical-world AI problems, should consider joining Tesla. Fastest path to deploying your ideas irl [in real life].”

In other words, Tesla is using AI Day to scope out potential new employees that can help the company continue to grow and expand on its artificial intelligence technologies. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but announcing AI Day as a big event on Twitter is bound to set some people’s expectations unrealistically high — even with direct confirmation the event exists for recruiting. It’s always possible that Tesla and Musk could surprise everyone with a big announcement anyway, but at least now, AI Day is shaping up to be a pretty timid gathering.
