Elon Musk would consider having Tesla acquire a legacy automaker

Elon Musk would look at leveraging Tesla’s mega $554 billion market cap to purchase a heritage automaker, but only as long as it was on favorable terms, the billionaire entrepreneur stated Tuesday in an extensive interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner.

Musk, who received an award Tuesday in the media giant, spoke his various interests and businesses, notably SpaceX and Tesla, both of which he contributes.

Döpfner noticed that Tesla’s evaluation far exceeds the market cap of incumbent automakers like BMW, Daimler and VW, which combined with others in the business once dismissed Musk’s ability to produce electric vehicles . When asked whether it would be a significant option to purchase among the heritage automakers, Musk stated it was possible, but only under certain conditions.

“Well, I think we all ’re certainly not going to establish a hostile takeover,” ” Musk explained. “So I guess when there was a favorable person, if someone mentioned, ‘Hey, we still think it would be a great idea to merge with Tesla,’ we certainly could have that dialogue. But, you knowwe don’t need it to become a hostile takeover type of situation. ”

Tesla now sits at an enviable location — though Musk stated once more that its share price is too high. The company, which will join the S&P 500 Index on December 21, is now the most precious automaker on the planet, surpassing opponents that produce far more cars annually.

Investors have sunk cash into Tesla shares largely since they view it more as a technology firm compared to an automaker, though the vast majority of its revenues today come from car sales.

Musk noticed that automakers largely dismissed Tesla in its early days.

“When we unveiled the Roadster in 2007, I suggest it was just basically, they simply stated, ‘Oh, well, you’re basically a whole lot of fools,’ ” Musk remarked, including that rivals are now far friendlier than in the past.
