Energy Jobs: More Shuffles at Tesla, Layoffs at Cypress Creek, PG&E Departures Just Beginning

This year begins from several huge players in the business with some significant news. 

Tesla announced on its fourth-quarter earnings call Wednesday that CFO Deepak Ahuja will be retiring, and Zach Kirkhorn, formerly the company’s VP of financing, will soon be taking over. 

Put simply Tesla information, CEO Elon Musk lately declared  that approximately 7% of their company's fulltime staff could be cut, along with temps and builders not deemed critical. The decrease comes six months later Tesla laid off roughly 9 percent of its workforce.

Arch Rao based Span.IO last year along using additional Tesla Energy alums. Given the recent announcement of Tesla layoffs, Span.IO announced that it’s hiring for a variety of positions. Span says it’s construction software and components to allow plug-and-play renewable installation for houses.

There are also substantial layoffs happening at Cypress Creek Renewables, Greentech Media reports. The solar programmer will drop about 20 percent of its workforce, or about 100 individuals, according to sources. The company said the reductions come amid an effort to refocus on its competitive markets.

Since Pacific Gas & Electric reaches bankruptcy, a slew of senior leadership, including the utility’s CEO, have now been shattered. Geisha Williams was one of only a small number of girls to hold the top place of an energy company and the initial Latina CEO of a Fortune 500 company in America. Bloomberg additionally reported the departures of Patrick Hogan, SVP of electrical operations; Kevin Dasso, VP of electrical asset management; along with Gregg Lemler, VP of electrical transmission. With proper bankruptcy proceeding  getting underway, this is likely just the tip of this iceberg.

In less fraught utility information, PPL has attracted on Lori Mueller as VP of client services. She unites PPL from Affinegy in Austin, where she was VP of client experience and operations.

BP-backed solar developer Lightsource has attracted on Kevin Smith as CEO for the Americas. He was most recently CEO of SolarReserve and was with Invenergy prior to that.

Blockchain energy system Energy Web Foundation has hired Walter Kok as its first COO. He was formerly a manager with ING.  

Commercial solar programmer Standard Solar has attracted on Dan Dobbs because EVP of structured finance. Dobbs was most recently with Standard Solar, and formerly with Anbaric Development Partners, Solar Grid Storage, Greensmith and SunEdison.

Andrew Tang, that has been at Greensmith for almost five years, was promoted to VP of energy storage and solar integration for Wärtsilä, which currently owns Greensmith.

Tanuj Deora begins the year in a new role as VP of market development at Simple Energy. He was formerly EVP of this Smart Electric Power Alliance and was with IHS prior to that.

Carmine Tilghman additionally transferred this month to join solar tracking firm Array Technologies as SVP of commercial operations. He was most recently at Twin Cat Energy Services, and Tucson Electric Power for over 20 years prior to that.

Enphase announced this month that Wilf Johnston was appointed general director for the Asia-Pacific area.

Sol Systems has a few new developments to start 2019. The firm has attracted on Elizabeth Weir as COO and Jeff Miller as a senior manager for onsite solar for both municipal and corporate clients. Weir was formerly at Apex Clean Energy; Miller is still a SolarCity alum.

John Conley, another SolarCity/Tesla departure, has a new function as CCO at commercial solar programmer Dynamic Energy.

The California Department of Insurance has called Michael Peterson as the nation ’s first deputy commissioner of sustainability and climate to engage the insurance industry in the fight against climate change.

Following six years at SunPower, Rex Liu has joined Motiv Power Systems as director of product management. Motiv provides electrical chassis for trucks and buses.

Tess Williams and Dan Sowder have abandoned Doosan GridTech into co-found Sound Grid Partners. Audio Grid intends to “quicken the decarbonization of the electrical grid by providing engineering, mediation and analytics capacities that allow utilities to make distributed energy assets a normal part of a safe, dependable, low-cost electrical grid. ”

Beginning in February, Allison Ingram will be the SVP for finance and operations for Advanced Energy Economy. She was formerly with the Society of American Military Engineers.

K. Kaufman has made the Smart Energy Power Alliance to join energy storage firm Fluence Energy as manager of communications. Fluence kicked off this past year as a joint venture of AES and Siemens.

Erin Greeson abandoned after a short stint at Virgin Galactic to join SimpliPhi Power as manager of public relations.
