European car sales down by 27% into October 2020, but electrified vehicles gain, courtesy of mild-hybrids



As a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, European automobile registrations to October have dropped from 27 percent to 9.7 million units when compared with the same period this past year, and October’s 1.13 million units is a 7% fall from the 1.21 million units listed in October 2019, according to statistics published by analytics outfit Jato Dynamics.

Despite the downward trend, sales of vehicles have gained grip, as revealed by a month’s sales. In October 2019, electrified vehicles – which include pure electrics (BEV), plug hybrids (PHEV) and hybrids – accounted for 10% of total sales, tailing behind petrol (26 percent ) and petrol (57 percent ) versions.

Last month, EVs managed to procure 27 percent of the market share, and while petrol vehicle sales nevertheless lead at 44 percent, electric now has the advantage over diesel (26 percent ). October was also the second month in a row which saw electrified vehicles outsell diesel vehicles, suggesting the switchover could be irreversible.

Of course, some view is essential. Even though EVs saw a 153% increase in sales when compared with the same period this past year, a lot of it was because of mild-hybrids, which really isn’t all that electric in the final analysis. That segment, led by strong performances from the likes of the Fiat 500 Mild Hybrid and Ford Puma, accounted for 32 percent of EV sales for each month. Last year, it had been at 16%.

All-electric car sales went up from 21% to 25 percent in the segment, similarly plug hybrids, from 21% to 24 percent. This comes at the expense of pure hybrid sales, which dropped from 42% last October to 19% a month.

Concerning pure electric offerings, the Volkswagen ID 3 has been the best-selling fully electric vehicle in Europe last month, together with 10,475 units marketed, even though it is worth noting that more than half of its registrations were from business and fleet sales.
