EV And PHEV Sales Rise In The European Union As Diesel Loses Popularity

Sales of electrical vehicles jumped significantly across the European Union at the last quarter of 2019, accounting for 4.4 per cent of new car sales in the interval.

Data in the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) reveals that need for lsquo;electrically-chargeable’ vehicles jumped 81.3% in Q4 2019 into 156,805 units in total. Demand for battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids improved by 77.9 percent and 86.4 per cent, respectively.

Hybrid vehicles still account for the vast majority of alternatively-powered vehicle sales in the EU, changing 252,371 units at the fourth quarter, with a 69.2 percent growth over the exact three-month interval in 2018.

“Even before the EU CO2 criteria for new automobiles climbed in January, the electrical car sales in the last quarter of 2019 reached an all-time large. This proves that the demand is there also is rising, and the main reason for low sales until today is a poor supply of models from carmakers,” Transport & Environment clean vehicles and e-mobility director Julia Poliscanova stated of the statistics.

“The CO2 criteria will require the automobile business to sell around a 5 percent share of electric automobiles in 2020, which will be within reach and will kick-start the path to zero emissions liberty demanded from the European Green Deal,” she included.

With sales of alternatively-powered vehicles to the increase, the amount of diesel automobiles sold in the EU dropped by 3.7 per cent to 1 million units, accounting for 29.5 percent of new-car registrations. In spite of this, some niches did see an up-take in vehicle purchases. Those comprised France (+7.3 percent), Germany (+4.3 percent), Romania (+31.1 percentage ), Sweden (+30.5 percentage ), Hungary (+18.4 percentage ), Belgium (+17.7 percentage ), and Slovenia (+18.2 percent.)

Sales of petrol cars rose by 11.9 percent and accounted for 57.3 percent of the EU market.
