Cadillac has been appointed the lead electric car brand of all General Motors in a statement . The pivot toward electrification is sudden, but depending on comments made recently by one of GM’s leading executives, it appears going electric may be the brand’s last remaining hope.

Newly appointed GM President Mark Reuss gets candid in an interview with Reuters. “We don’t have any opportunities left with taking Cadillac to a very new location,” he said. “This can be pretty much it. ”

“So we really have to hit the ball ,” he further added. “It’s my job to be sure we perform. ”

Johan de Nysschen aimed to alter Cadillac when he had been appointed president of this newest at 2014. He set out a $12 billion merchandise plan, altered the nomenclature, and moved the newest ’s headquarters to New York. Unfortunately, Cadillac was too slow to keep up with consumer demand for crossovers, as Reuters points out. In 2017, Cadillac eventually dedicated to reducing its own lineup of sedans in favor of SUVs and electrified vehicles. Earnings in the U.S. fell under de Nysschen’s tenure, that led to his ousting final calendar year. Cadillac is now returning to Detroit, and Steve Carlisle has been tapped to lead the luxury brand.

Currently, Cadillac will lead the EV fee at GM. The very first version from GM’s new EV architecture will be a Cadillac. GM said in 2017 that it will introduce its next EV stage by 2021.

Reuss said it’s too early to tell when Cadillac’s whole lineup will change to electric power. He anticipates that the lineup will incorporate a combination of electrified and combustion engine automobiles “for quite a couple of years. ” China, the planet ’s biggest car market, is forecast to aid Cadillac’s future expansion.

Cadillac’s new transformation plan comes at a time of great change for GM as a whole. The automaker is ceasing operations at five plants in North America amid declining need for sedans. Meanwhile, within the following two years, GM will double its own resources for electric and autonomous car programs. By early next decade, GM expects over 75 percent of its own international sales volume will come from five car architectures.
