The Hyundai Motor Group has confirmed that both Kia and Genesis will launch electric crossovers this year.

The two EVs will be underpinned by the company’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and will arrive at a similar time to the all-electric Ioniq 5. The news were delivered by Hyundai Motor Group chairman Euisun Chung on his New Year’s message for the Group’s employees around the globe, where he outlined the company’s strategy for 2021 and beyond.

CarScoops understands that the electric Genesis crossover in question is codenamed JW and, based on spy shots from August 2020, appears to be similar in size to the Ioniq 5. It will most likely feature the same Quad Lamps at the front and at the rear as other recent Genesis models.

Not only does the E-GMP platform that will underpin the Genesis JW support both 400- and 800-volt charging, but it is thought the crossover will use two electric motors to provide it will all-wheel drive and a 72 kWh battery pack with an estimated range of 310 miles (500 km). The crossover may also offer optional wireless charging capability and should be priced to rival the likes of the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz EQB and EQA, and Audi Q4 e-tron.

As for the electric Kia crossover confirmed for 2021 by the Hyundai Motor Group, it is codenamed CV and should use similar mechanical components to the Genesis. It will probably not come with all of the same advanced technologies as the Genesis JW and will be more affordable.
