GM Is Planning Its Own Electric Vehicle Supercharger Network

Tesla has one of the vehicle charging networks from the United States, but it may soon get any competition from an unlikely source.

According to CNN, General Motors and building giant Bechtel will associate to construct “thousands of electrical vehicle fast-charging channels across the United States. ” Details concerning the community are limited, but the report states GM and Bechtel will form a new firm which is tasked with constructing the community.

GM will reportedly use their data and knowledge of electrical vehicles to ascertain the best locations for your chargers. Bechtel, on the other hand, will be responsible for the “engineering, building and permitting . ”

There’s no word on where those channels will be found, but executives told CNN that they wouldn’t big limited to areas close to the street. Specifically, GM’s vice president of electric vehicle charging and infrastructure, Mike Ableson, stated “The way we consider it, we wish to place chargers where they’re likely to have the best impact on EV adoption wherever that may be. I feel a good deal of these are actually likely to be in metropolitan areas. ”

Ableson went to say the automaker will utilize OnStar data to search to determine where people park and devote the time. As he said, “Our theory around quickly charging is that folks charge where their cars [are] spending time, right? ” This seems to indicate chargers could be found in areas where people congregate such as shopping malls and offices.

While GM and Bechtel would be the brains behind the operation, other businesses are being invited to invest in the venture. Neither could comment on the discussions, but it’therefore likely the talks may include other automakers with strategies to launch electrical vehicles.
