Here’s Where You Can Buy or Donate Reusable Face Masks

A company specializing in kitchen supplies is leveraging its product design expertise to build and ship masks to those in need. As everyone tries to cope with the global coronavirus pandemic, people quickly realized that getting ahold of reusable face masks would be an issue. This is one way to secure them for personal use or purchase some to donate in bulk.

In March of this year, the FDA issued guidance to expand the availability of masks for medical personnel and the general public. These documents don’t force any new rules or laws outright, but the give a good idea of what the Administration suggests for the overall wellness of the US. Similarly, the CDC suggests everyone wear masks outdoors for the next few weeks, both to help ward off infection and to stop carriers of the coronavirus from spreading it unknowingly. The problem is, despite how these decisions increase awareness of the importance of masks they don’t change how difficult they are to find.

That’s a problem a company called GIR (its slogan is “Get It Right”) hopes to solve. While GIR normally makes kitchen utensils, it’s been working hard on producing certified reusable face masks. These FDA-approved masks are made with medical-grade silicone and ship with five filters. They’re washable, dishwasher safe, and the filters can be used all day. The company mentions that these are not N95 masks, but the filters included still meet the standards outlined in the FDA’s guidance memo.

The best part about GIR’s masks, beyond that they’ll help with the nationwide scarcity, is that the website offers the option to buy mask kits in bulk. Customers can purchase large quantities of masks and send them to hospitals and other facilities straight from GIR (of course, those organizations can also make bulk orders themselves). The site prioritizes large bulk orders ahead of individual customer sales in an effort to make sure people on the front lines are serviced first.

While one company producing masks isn’t ground-breaking, it’s yet another example of the positive trend of businesses stepping up to the challenge and helping people deal with COVID-19. The US hasn’t issued any strict mandates requiring companies to transition their engineering systems, but things like this, and the work of companies like Tesla and Ford show signs that we truly are in this together. As an added bonus, mask and ventilator production also helps keep people working in these manufacturing facilities, so ultimately, it’s good for business, the economy, and public health.
