Last week, following the appalling violence at the US Capitol building, Twitter announced that they will be suspending President Donald Trump’s account “for both continued and severe offenses of [Twitter’s] Civic Integrity coverage. ” Then, mentioning the assumed “threat of further incitement of violence,” Twitter announced that they had “eternally suspended” Trump’s account.

Then, the Big Tech giants also rallied to shut Parler, a favorite choice socket among conservatives.

While many celebrated Trump’s suspension, there were other people — even some on the Left — that criticized Twitter’s decision and the impact it would have on free speech in America.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

Only a couple of days following Twitter’s announcement, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) — that are frequently vocal critics of conservatives and conservative principles — published a statement increasing concern over the “unchecked energy ” of Big Tech, along with the impact it might have on minority voices.

“For months, President Trump has been using social media platforms to con uncertainty about the outcomes of the election to sabotage the will of voters. We understand the desire to permanently suspend him today, but it must concern everyone when firms such as Facebook and Twitter wield the unchecked ability to remove people from programs that have become crucial for the speech of billions — particularly when political truths make those choices easier. President Trump can turn into his media team or Fox News to speak with the general public, but other people — such as the numerous Black, Brown, along with LGBTQ activists who’ve been mesmerized by societal media firms — will not have this luxury. It is our hope that these businesses will apply their rules transparently to everyone,” that the ACLU wrote.

Angela Merkel

On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, through her spokesman Steffen Seibert, criticized Twitter’so actions as “problematic. ” According to this Associated Press, Seibert said that the liberty of view is a basic right of “basic significance. ”

“This basic right can be intervened in, but according to the legislation and within the framework characterized by legislators — not according to a decision by the management of societal media programs,” Seibert told reporters. “Seen from this angle, so the chancellor believes it problematic that the balances of the U.S. president have now been permanently blocked. ”

Emily Ratajkowski

Model, actress and Leftist activist Emily Ratajkowski — true while “drifting a conspiracy theory that Trump supporters were permitted to breach the United States Capitol” — voiced concern that censorship might later be implemented to “some of us. ”

This gives Facebook/tech/Zuck THE MOST POWER. If he is able to shut the president up/off he can shut any of us up/off

My issue is that this gives enormous tech the chance to shut “leftist extremists” that are important political leaders.

“How can you censor someone: ‘Let’so see, Ipersonally, as the judge of the Holy Inquisition, will penalize you because I think what you’re expression is harmful,’” he continued. “Where is your law, where’s the law, what are the standards? That is an dilemma of authorities, this is not an issue for private businesses. ”

Writing on Twitter, Presidential spokesman Jesús Ramírez elaborated further about the place.

“Facebook’s decision to silence the present leader of the United States requires a debate on freedom of expression, the free exchange of information about the net, democracy and the role of the businesses that administer (social) networks. ”

Mateusz Morawiecki

Poland’s Prime Minister spoke generally on the issue of censorship in response to recent events, saying that “Algorithms or even the owners of corporate giants shouldn’t determine which views are right and which are not,” and that “There are not any and can be no consent to censorship. ”

According to the Washington Post, Morawiecki also stated Tuesday that societal networking corporations shouldn’t censor views that they don’t discuss and called for new regulations that would govern the utilization of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram from the European Union.

In Poland, “the operation of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are governed by lawenforcement ” and Morawiecki explained that “The owners of societal programs can’t act above the law. We’ll suggest that similar regulations will also be set up in all of the European Union. ”

Michael McCormack

Acting Prime Minister of Australia, Michael McCormack, “blasted [Twitter’s] move as censorship of political speech once the firm hadn’t suspended other viewpoints on its site. ”

“I don’t believe in that kind of censorship. But, you understand, I meanthere’s been a lot of individuals that ’ve ever said and done a lot of things Twitter formerly that haven’t obtained that kind of condemnation or, really, censorship,” said McCormack. “That’s an issue for Twitter. They’t made this call. They’t got a companythey&; rsquo;t got a company to run and they’t decided this decision. ”

Keri Hilson

Envision different leaders or favorite figures not being able to voice their view if it opposes bulk of world leaders…Our liberty of speech being obtained from us. ”

“Slowly but surely (censorship),” she warned. “If the chief of this ‘complimentary world’ can be removed. Imagine that same right of civilians. Imagine believing each time you browse ‘untrue information detected’ along with propaganda, deceptive stories, and flat out lies being that the only thing we see. ”
