Reports from German press have noticed that among Mercedes-Benz’s crucial production executives, Rene Reif, has defected to American electric car maker Tesla, which is now in the process of constructing its initial domestic factory in Germany. Needless to say, employees ’ union IG Metall wasn’t happy about the executive’s alleged “betrayal. ”
While Reif nor even Tesla has supported the news, IG Metall took the unusual step of declaring the executive’s death by Mercedes-Benz’s engine outlets at Berlin. As mentioned in a report by Deutsche Welle, the union declared the “defection” at a media release calling for protests in the engine factory on Thursday, November 12. Jan Otto, head of IG Metall Berlin, shared the union’s thoughts about Reif’s death.
“We can’t build the future using soulless managers like this. We don’t understand why this type of conventional and innovative car manufacturer like the Daimler Group wants to capitulate to its American rival. We want to shape the long run in the factory. We’re speaking about the state politicians in this way. On Thursday afternoon we’ll place the first sign in Berlin. We’ll make it crystal very clear that we view the shift in the plant manager as treason, it is questionable if we have not been lied to the total time,” ” Otto said in IG Metall Berlin’s press release.

Before his passing, Reif had functioned as the top manager at Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz Berlin engine factory. He also has extensive expertise in production, working as the leader of production and engineering in Daimler’s joint venture in China, which began constructing the EQC all-electric SUV last year. Daimler, for its own part, has verified that Reif had asked an early retirementthough it failed to state in the event the executive is really moving to Tesla.
Reif’s death has a rather inopportune time for Mercedes-Benz because its own parent company, Daimler, has been confronting difficulties. This is partly due to the company’s late shift in its own electromobility initiatives. Even beyond competition from Tesla, Daimler’s EV attempts have not borne as much fruit, with rival carmakers like Volkswagen creating more headway with automobiles like the ID.3.
Amid the challenges, IG Metall noticed that the business will likely be putting off 2,5000 workers in the Berlin plant. Otto noticed that although Mercedes-Benz has so far refused to discuss the matter of layoffs at the Berlin engine center, IG Metall would struggle to keep the factory going. “We are on the cusp of a key conflict in the German car market,” Otto stated while adding the potential closing of the factory in the face of Tesla’s emerging existence in Germany is “catastrophic. ”
IG Metall regional manager Birgit Dietze also spoke about Tesla’s recently-revealed starting wage, which gained praise from Jochem Freyer, the Head of Worker Agency in Frankfurt. Based on Freyer, Tesla has consented to cover workers without schooling and who have been jobless at the time of their application in the company that a salary of €2,700 per month, and this is higher than what is anticipated. Freyer was optimistic about the total amount, stating the commission is a “blast for this level. ” Dietze, however, disagrees. “Entry-level wages in the auto industry are significantly high,” she explained.
