Last month, Mercedes-Benz announced the U.S. launch of the EQC electric crossover would be delayed by one year as the automaker wanted to satisfy the growing customer demand from Europe first.
That was a curious and unexpected announcement considering that the German automaker had released pricing for the EQC in the United States only a month before at the LA Auto Show.
And now we learn there’s not that much demand from Europe to begin with – at least not at the moment. A report from Germany’s Die Welt picked up by Jalopnik claims Mercedes-Benz only sold 55 EQCs in its home market of Germany in November 2019.

That would be somewhat understandable if we were talking about the first month of sales, but the truth is the EQC has been on sale in Germany since last summer. Interestingly, Die Welt asked Mercedes-Benz to provide sales figures for the EQC but the automaker declined, explaining that the number of registrations is not available.
The German publication did not give up and asked turned to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) directly to get hold of registration data. As it turns out, the organization records lists 55 Mercedes-Benz EQC registrations for November, including 19 models in AMG Line trim.
That’s extremely low considering that rival Audi shifted 192 e-tron EVs during the same month in Germany. In fairness, the e-tron has been on the market for a few months longer. In March, the e-tron’s first month on the market, KBA counted 478 registrations.
To put things into perspective, the entire market for electric vehicles in Germany reached 57,533 units in the first 11 months of 2019. That’s only a drop in the ocean considering that the country’s overall car market reached 3.6 million vehicles during the same period.
