Our yearly Of The Year awards celebrate the very best car, truck, SUV, and automobile industry character. They also capture a moment in time and serve as reminders, upon manifestation that is future, which excellence comes in many shapes, sizes, and magnitudes.
We recognize a summit — a game changer whose impact is felt throughout the industry Several years. Even the Chrysler PT Cruiser (COTY 2001) fits that bill, as does the Nissan GT-R (COTY 2009). Occasionally our champions break ground for entirely new sorts of vehicles, as the Lexus RX 300 (the very first SUVOTY, in 1999) did.
There are those rare vehicles that wind up being bellwethers for changes in culture, business, and consumption habits. Would you imagine a universe with no Toyota Prius (COTY 2004) or even Tesla Model S (COTY 2013)? I could ’t. And for the peanut gallery, so I will acknowledge there were times (under previous administrations) when we have swept up in the hype or so were just plain incorrect.
This is not that season. 2019 will likely be remembered as the season of altering archetypes as moments in time proceed. Just examine our winning Truck of the Year–each little a stump-pulling ground pounder until you get inside and revel in cosseting air suspension its leather, also also enormous app-laden touchscreen display. That really can be a truck, but it’s unlike any truck that you ’ve ever seen.
Same goes for our SUV of the Year. Instantly recognizable by silhouette its title conjures up sight of soldiers taking mountains in far-off lands and weekend scrambles via rock-strewn canyons. But, veterans of foreign wars and King of this Hammers alike will recognize the creature comforts within this SUV. Removable doors and also a fold-down windshield, plus heated seats and Apple CarPlay using Waze integration? Yup, you truly can have everything.
And then there is our Car of the Year–each ounce the legendary German sport sedan with the styling and handling fingerprints to establish it. An all-star team cherry-picked in the highest echelons of automotive luxury (believe Audi, BMW, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini) helped birth our winner, but plot twist–the spirit of the Bavaria beater is forged from Seoul, South Korea.
In terms of the Person of the Year for 2019, he needs no introduction or debate. You & rsquo; ll know, As soon as you know.
Time will tell what sort of impact that these winners will have, but the takeaway, as murmured with our own judges during the months of OTY testing and deliberations, is that we are in an automotive age. At no time in history have cars, trucks, and SUVs provided improved than what is available today quality, functionality, efficacy, technology, value, and more safety. Congratulations to all Of The Year contenders and our deserving winners.
We’re entering our 70th year of MotorTrend and will be celebrating across each platform that bears our name. Thank you for the support thus far, and I hope you’ll join us for the trip ahead.
