More than 185,000 people have signed petitions to not allow billionaire Jeff Bezos from returning to Earth after he blasts off to space today.
Bezos, the founder of Amazon and space exploration firm Blue Origin, revealed on June 7th that he and his brother, Mark Bezos, would fly into space aboard the company’s New Shepard rocket on July 20th in its first flight to carry people.
3 days following Bezos’ announcement, 2 petitions were swiftly launched to try to prevent the billionaire from reentering Earth. More than 164,000 people have now signed a Change.org petition titled “Do not allow Jeff Bezos to return to Earth.”
“Billionaires should not exist …on earth, or in space, but should they decide the latter they should stay there,” the petition’s description said.
Some of those who signed gave a reason, stating that “being let back into Earth is a privilege — not a right,” and “Earth don’t want people like Jeff, Bill, Elon, and other such billionaires.” This appears to be a reference to Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.
Another petition, titled: “Petition To Not Allow Jeff Bezos Re-Entry To Earth,” has accumulated more than 22,000 signatures. Jose Ortiz, who set up the petition, said in the description that Bezos was “an evil overlord hellbent on global domination.”
“The fate of humanity is in your hands,” Ortiz also wrote.
Bezos’ space trip includes him, his brother Mark Bezos, Wally Funk, an eighty-two-year-old pioneer of the space race, and eighteen-year-old student Oliver Daemen from the Netherlands.
The New Shepard will fly to the Kármán line, an imaginary boundary one-hundred kilometers, or sixty-two miles, above the Earth’s surface, where the capsule is designed to separate from the booster, reenter the atmosphere and float back down to Earth with the help of parachutes.
The rocket launched earlier today from a private launch site near Van Horn, Texas and it parachuted back down to the West Texas desert eleven minutes later.
“I want to go on this flight because it’s a thing I wanted to do all my life,” Bezos said in a video posted to Instagram on June 7th. “It’s an adventure — it’s a big deal for me.”
Both petitions had been seeking 25,000 to 50,000 signatures, which would make them two of the top-signed petitions on Change.org, according to the website.
Sorry to say to those who signed, he has been up and has safely come back down again… so you might have to wait until his next adventure to get him truly evacuated from Planet Earth!
