The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has provided an update on the legality of Tesla’s most fascinating steering yoke that surfaced with the facelifted Model S and Model X.

Tesla took the covers off to the facelifted Model S and Model X in January and in the time, that the NHTSA released a statement revealing it could not yet find out whether the yoke would satisfy Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The NHTSA has since provided a little more clarification regarding the procedure being undertaken to see if the yoke is lawful.

“NHTSA is aware of the recently launched Tesla steering yoke in some Model S vehicles,” it said in a statement provided to Teslarati. &ldquoWe asked and obtained advice from Tesla concerning the steering yoke and we remain actively engaged with the business during our review. NHTSA regularly participates with auto manufacturers and providers to better understand the newest technologies and features they develop and introduce to the U.S. fleet. ”

No deadline has been given as to if this review may be performed nor if the yoke is going to be decided to be lawful or not.

It remains to be seen just why Tesla believed introducing a steering yoke such as this is a good idea, apart from helping to create connections for itself. Does the design mean you won’t be able to rest your hand on top of the steering wheel while driving but it is going to also make gradual driving maneuvers and parking unnecessarily difficult. Fortunately, the two updated EVs are accessible with routine steering wheels.
