Porsche Taycan U.S. Deployment Impacted By COVID-19

Demand for the Porsche Taycan in North America was strong, yet only 350 units have been marketed from the U.S. from December through March.

The reason for this is the Taycan is being built at the Zuffenhausen meeting plant in Stuttgart, Germany, where production was stopped for six weeks from early April and only declared in mid-May, thus diluting the Taycan’s rollout from the U.S.

America was this nameplate’s launch marketplace, using the high-priced Turbo and Turbo S variations coming back in December, followed with the lower-priced 4S version in mid-April.

“That six-week window was very much reserved for satisfying the U.S. demand,” stated Porsche North America boss Klaus Zellmer in a meeting with Autonews. “We had to take tens of thousands of cars from our revenue plan that we will not get into the United States and Canada. ”

Nevertheless, global demand for the Porsche EV has outstripped the carmaker’s expectations, forcing it to allegedly double its annual production capacity to 40,000 units.

“The Taycan is the sports car from the vehicle segment right now,” added Zellmer. “That’s what people expect for. ”

He went on to state this is a new era for his company and as a milestone, the rollout of this Taycan could be compared to Porsche “coming from sports cars and selling an SUV in 2002. ”

Just how significant of an automobile this is really because of Porsche was made quite evident back in February if the German manufacturer conducted its first Super Bowl advertising in more than 20 years in order to market its EV.
