[Product Roadmap] Contextual intelligence in logistics and tech expertise shaped Blowhorn’s evolution

Bengaluru-headquartered Blowhorn was built to address the toughest issues in an asset-light style. Claiming to become India’s very first and just full-stack logistics firm, Blowhorn has tech-enabled systems: warehouses, transport, along with capabilities in all 3 components of the logistics value chain.

The logistics startup envisions moving logistics – make it 1 gm or one tonne – by building a shipping network across India. In doing this it wants to democratise logistics providers and help enterprises and SMEs.

Co-founder and CEO Mithun Srivatsa tells YourStory,

“If a person wants to shift something from 1 location to another or if a business wishes to handle the entire vent or deliver to end customers we’ve got the capability to implement it. The creators chose to stay bootstrapped until the startup began generating earnings. Blowhorn registered a 3x growth and preserved its own capital efficiency in the first two-and-half years, Mithun says.

These days, the logistics startup is now backed by billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper, who has funded Skype, Tesla and SpaceX.

Blowhorn had started off using a controlled platform out of Google App Engine (GAE), which has been easy to construct on using a custom angular and custom-based backend.

However, it stumbled upon the timeless challenge of managing systems sophistication, as an increasing number of enterprises began to utilize the stage.

The tech team initially deployed on Google cloud, and moved to Amazon Web Services. Now, the stack can be obtained to any cloud-hosted platform.

The Blowhorn staff took two weeks and totally transitioned to some docker-based Python and Django pile with several data stores like RDBMS, Mongo, and Redis, which supported open-source stack with no seller lock-in.

“It is simple to re establish a microservices structure with the latest technologies, GOLANG in our case, and fail during execution due to over-engineering or premature optimisation. When it comes to product creation and its subsequent technological progress, iterating the product based on user-feedback loops is always a key pattern.

“When we had been operating on the fulfilment heap we had deep integrations to customer order and inventory systems for finishing monitoring, and realised this could entail a good deal of time coordinating across two tech teams. We built out a simple API interface, and asked our sales and marketing teams to pitch it for clients; today we can integrate with e commerce sites within a hour” he says.

Mithun adds that standardising procedures with templates and simple API integrations enabled this to take place. The constant feedback means very few elements of Blowhorn’s code-based providers don’t receive updated monthly. The group kept refining and refactoring to reduce any technical debt assembled over multiple features on the identical model.

One such instance is that the market model in which the staff initially required four steps before making a booking. It looked at real-time firebase updates, driver ETAs and quotes, and rewrote the entire flow in just two steps while capturing all essential data.

“Todaywe work with a complex inventory – out of omnichannel retailers, a multi-pickup/drop-off, enterprises that distribute several brands, or a nursery with all agritech features. We have one driver associate app, which takes the shape of a normal transport module (pickup/drop-off), warehousing module (scan barcode, deliver, MPOS, cash) or a last-mile module (returns, rejects, etc ),” Mithun says.
