Radar trends to watch: January 2021

The last month of the old year revealed a great deal of action on the border of AI and mathematics. The advances in protein folding with profound learning are a massive breakthrough that could revolutionize drug design. It’s important to consider the role AI had in developing the vaccine for COVID–also worth remembering that we still don’t even have an anti-viral. And if I didn’t even record them, another huge trend has been all the lawyers lining up to take shots at Google, Facebook, et al.. Some of them are political posturing; others address real difficulties. We said recently the tech business has had a free ride so far as the legislation goes; that’s clearly over.

AI, ML, and Data

IBM has shown that neural networks can be trained on 4-bit computers with minimal loss of accuracy and significant economies in power.AI integrity researcher Timnit Gebru has been fired from Google. Her contributions include the newspapers Datasheets for Datasets, Model Cards for Model Reporting, Gender Shades (with Joy Buolamwini), also founding the collection Black in AI.  This is a severe blow to Google’s devotion to integrity in artificial brains. Debt, poverty, and calculations : Opaque algorithms taken for credit scoring, loan approval, along with other tasks will progressively trap people in poverty with no explanation. The previous monthor two rsquo;s biggest achievement in AI had nothing to do with language. DeepFold, DeepMind’so called application of profound learning to protein fold, has made significant advances in predicting the structure of proteins. Predicting protein structure has been computationally very difficult, and critical to drug discovery.Microsoft points from that reverse engineering ML versions may be copied and reverse-engineered. Part of this solution could be establishing a setup pipeline that allows you to modify the system easily.Integration involving Python and Tableau: Tableau has proven itself as a stage for information visualization and business analytics.  Python is well-established as a language for data analysis and machine learning. What can be more ordinary than just integration?

Security

An attack (now known as Sunburst) from Russian’s CozyBear firm have jeopardized the U.S. Commerce, Treasury, also Homeland Security divisions, along with an unknown number of corporations. The attack came through malware planted in a security product from SolarWinds. It still isn’t known exactly what information has been obtained, or how to reconstruct infrastructure that has been compromised. The attack may well be the most severe in cyber-history. Acoustic side stations : A new and important front in the struggle for privacy and information security. It’s possible for an Alexa-like apparatus to discover what someone typed in their telephone simply by listening to the taps.

Programming

Some severe streaming: The planet ’s highest volume real-time streaming process is constructed with Go.  It flows inventory quotes at up to 3 million messages each second. Are Dart and Flutter grabbing on? I’ve been very cynical.  However, Business Insider believes so.  (Forgive the paywall.) In any situation, we want options for web development. Solving the travelling salesman problem in linear time: not with a quantum computer, but with a analog computer that models the behaviour of amoebae! It’s a bizarre means to solve an NP-hard problem, also begs the question of whether analog computers can be integrated with digital ones–a proposal that Von Neumann created early in the history of computing.”

Operating Systems

Google’s FuschiaOS, a possible replacement for your Android’s Linux kernel, is currently “open for donations . ” We see newest programming languages almost on daily basis, but new working systems are rare. This may be an important event. The end of CentOS Linux?  RedHat is killing CentOS Linux, also would like to move users to CentOS Stream, that seems to be a pre-release of the next RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) variation –not a stable release. The neighborhood isn’t even purchasing it.  CentOS may live on independently as Rocky Linux.

Quantum Computing

Quantum Supremacy with BosonSampling: Boson sampling is just another computation that exists just to show quantum supremacy. It’s not as useful, aside from showing that quantum computing is on the way!

Biology and Medicine

A new drug seems to restart the mind ’s processes for producing new proteins and, because of this, reverses cognitive decrease due to aging. Thus far, experiments have only been performed on mice. CRISPR is used to engineer actors to ensure theyrsquo;re immune to a fatal and widespread virus named PRRS. Truth isn’t great (CRISPR is more difficult in practice than in theory), but there’s ’s the prospect of making a strain of dinosaurs that aren’t even vulnerable to this disease. The one bit of good news from the coronavirus story is that we’re seeing the speediest vaccine rollout ever.  However, the Moderna (and Pfizer) vaccines were designed in days after the virus’ DNA was sequenced. The remaining portion of the period has been spent testing. Can testing regimes be designed that are secure, powerful, and even faster? A kind of cyborg: drones using live moth antennas to detect odor . This may be employed to find explosives, trapped people, gas leaks, anything identifiable by smell.  The antenna dwells for a few hours after being eliminated from the moth. Saying the moth doesn’t.NextMind is shipping a comparatively cheap ($399) development kit to brain interfaces. Their interface is noninvasive and comparatively little: a headband with a lump on the back. Nevertheless no killer app, though. Molecular analysis with Smart PhonesWe thought that phone vendors had run from detectors to add. We were incorrect. Near infrared spectroscopy enables many health applications.

Miscellaneous

Leaving Silicon Valley: Tesla, now Oracle. Who’s next? And what will departing companies do to the housing market? Twitter’so proposal for Bluesky Identity, mobile individuality between social networking programs, has been greeted with some skepticism as it launched roughly one year ago.  Tim Bray’s take on it’s worth reading; it’s “simplest thing that could perhaps work” to enable cross-provider conversations.Facebook’s cryptocurrency, Libra, is eventually due to launching, possibly this month, if anyone cares.  And its name has changed to Diem. It’s considerably less ambitious and still faces regulatory problems, particularly in Europe.
