Recharging Electric Vehicles Is More Affordable Than Most People Think

Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, but they still only represent a small fraction of the overall automotive market.

That’s going to change as several automakers are operating on new and more affordable electric vehicles. While adoption continues to be an issue, a study by Comparethemarket.com is highlighting one of their lesser known advantages — low prices.

As part of this study, the company decided the average price of power in 36 countries around the globe. Taking the price per kWh, they then calculated how far it would be to recharge some Tesla Model S using a 100 kWh battery pack.

According to the study, Americans generally cover $0.13 per kWh so this means the Model S can be recharged for $13.00. This ’s quite cheap, however it’s nearly two times as far as it might cost in Chile.

Australia and Canada were tied for second in $11.00, whereas South Korea wasn’t far behind at $12.00. European counties were more costly as the expense to recharge Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg had been $20.00. Even the UK and Japan were tied at $22.00, whereas Germany and Denmark would be the most expensive at $33.00 and $34.00, respectively.

The study focused on recharging at home, but how much you’ll cover is dependent upon a number of factors including when and where you charge. By way of example, Electrify America charges a flat rate of $1 per session and $0.25 to $0.99 per minute (depending on your charger’s power rate). The company also offers a $4 per month pass which gets rid of the session fee also also lowers the charging price to $0.18 to $0.70 per minute.
