Up until today, we heard that Audi had five electric cars in the pipeline, none of which would compete directly against the Tesla Model 3. But the automaker is now confirming it is going to increase the lineup with an A4-sized electric sedan, reports Autocar.

The new car will slot under the E-Tron GT, which is about the size of the A6. Both electric sedans will sit on the PPE platform shared with Porsche.

“There will be [electric] SUVs and low-floor sporty cars like the E-Tron GT, which is our ‘halo’ car,” Audi design boss Marc Lichte told Autocar. “There will be an E-Tron GT in the [A4- sized] section as well. We’re working on this right now. ”

The E-Tron family starts rolling out this year. The big E-Tron crossover goes on sale in the U.S. at the middle of the year, and the E-Tron Sportback arrives in early 2020. The E-Tron GT hits the scene at the end of 2020, followed by the Q4 E-Tron that’s been confirmed for Europe at 2021 or afterwards. A Q2 L is destined for China only.

The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling luxury vehicle in the U.S. this past year. While we harbor ’t heard any info about U.S. accessibility for the A4-sized electric sedan, Autocar says it won’t arrive until 2023.

Audi has big plans to reach by 2025. By that time, one in three new Audis is targeted to get some kind of electrified powertrain. It hopes to start 12 pure EVs at the time.
