Review: The stunning 2019 Audi Q8 has a deal-breaking flaw

The 2019 Audi Q8 is the Form of the future. It’s amazing as it successfully merges the appearance of a sports sedan with the form of a SUV. It has flowing lines, sharp angles and only the ideal appearance off and on the road. Inside, it’s comfortable though a bit smaller than the title suggests. And under the hood, Audi paired a capable V6 engine with a 48-volt battery, creating a mild-hybrid installation that allegedly helps with gas economy.

However after spending a great deal of time at the Q8, I found it backward. Most crossovers provide the comfort of a car with the utility of the SUV. This one has the demanding comfort of a SUV with all the limited utility of a sedan. Worse yet, driving the Q8 around town can be a frustrating experience.

I spent a couple of weeks in the brand new Q8 to get a road trip from Detroit throughout Canada to New York City. I shot it on the countryside, about hilly passes, and during four of the five boroughs. My kids spilled Cheetos in the back. I lived in this car for hundreds of miles. This experience is different from most cars reviews. Most car reviews are written after a few hundred miles off in the auto, which can often result in milquetoast conclusions. Not this time.

I would like ’t enjoy the Q8. The bad outweighs the good. The stunted driving characteristics ruin the otherwise magnificent car or truck.

Review

The sedan is bleeding out, along with the crossover is still currently holding the knife. Consumers are overwhelming, picking these quasi-SUVs over sedans or sport utility vehicles. There’therefore a fantastic reason, too. Crossovers often provide the supple ride quality of a car with the utility of the SUV. I’m likely to report that the Q8 does exactly the opposite. It has the rough ride of the SUV along with the limited usefulness of a Condo.

The Q8 has a perplexing powertrain. It doesn’t want to move ahead. Several times throughout my period with all the Q8, I nearly got into an accident due to the timing of their transmission. It often left me hanging at the middle of the road while it took time to translate the motor ’s directions to the tires. I had been honked at constantly while at NYC.

A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 rests under the hood, also Audi claims it’s great for 335 HP along with 369 pound-foot of torque. The Q8 isn’t underpowered, and it sports a version of ZF’s omnipresent 8-speed transmission. The Audi Q8 is one of the first internal combustion vehicles to be paired using a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This is believed to help enhance fuel economy by relegating acceleration to some mild hybrid installment, and this could end up being the reason for my frustration.

Whoever’s to attribute, in actual life, the transmission feels as though it doesn’t use the initial and second gear. There’therefore a minute or two hesitation between the time that the pedal is engaged before the vehicle makes the decision to move forward. Once logged, the Q8 is a beautiful expressway cruiser with loads of power to overtake meandering sedans. At rate, it’s comfortable and confident. In a standstill, it’s hesitant and frustrating.

I’m not alone in this frustration. Car and Driver claims that the Q8 is “it felt hesitant around town unless we smashed the gas pedal. ” Motor1 says, “At times [the transmission is] clunky, particularly when hastening …” Motor Trend said , “We noticed, though, a longish delay in the delivery of torque after you provide it some beans. ”

Audi built the Q8 as a multipurpose utility vehicle and outfitted it with many driving manners, including Dynamic, which enriches the vehicle and allegedly changes the transmission response. Select Off Road or All Road, along with the Q8 raises a few inches, offering better ground clearance. This is handy on Michigan streets where post-winter potholes will be the size of baths.

These driving manners give the Q8 additional utility and foreshadow a future in which cars better adapt to their own driver’s demands. Audi has provided similar features for years but not to this extreme. The Sport mode drops the Q8 to the ground while the Off-Road mode raises the Q8 to a level where it might handle significant terrain.

Sadly, the adjustable modes didn’t handle the lackluster powertrain. In Sport mode, the Q8’s transmission has been slow.

At the very least Q8 is comfortable.

The interior of this Q8 is beautiful and contains Audi’s new dual-touchscreen infotainment center. I love it. Audi long had the best user interface in the business. This one is entirely different and better.

Audi proves two little screens are better than a large display

There are just two touchscreens at the middle of this Q8. The one on top handles mapping, media, and vehicle configurations. The one at the bottom is for climate management. Both feature excellent haptic feedback. Hit a button on the display, along with a slight vibration makes it feel as if you touched on a true button.

To me, that dual display setup is a better solution compared to a giant display such as Tesla or Ram utilizes in their vehicles. In Audi’s alternative, both are tilted to offer easy accessibility, and there’s of a learning curve. The installation follows the general button placement found in cars for the last few decades. Climate is always on and always on the bottom. The mapping and radio display is on the top and can be turned off to reduce distractions.

A display lives behind the steering wheel, too, and sports an identical layout to Audi’s present system. The driver can quickly switch between information screens with all the speedo and tach on either side. Hit a button in your steering wheel, along with the indicators decrease in size while the map raises. It’s handy feature.

The Q8’therefore seats are excellent and almost compensate for its lackluster driving capacities. They’re firm yet pliable with infinite alterations. The seats, using their built in massagers, created the dull Ohio turnpike a pleasant experience.

The Q8’s interior space isn’t as considerable as I expected and I believe it has to do with the design scheme. The Q8 unites the small Q5 and seven-seater Q7 at Audi’s lineup. The name suggests that the Q8 is larger compared to Q7 in precisely exactly the same manner that the Audi Condo A8 is larger compared to A7. However, it’s not possible. The Q8 is a five-passenger vehicle with less cargo room available compared to Q7.

I managed to get three suitcases plus a few backpacks at the back. The dearth of storage space will be evident throughout the cabin. The center console is currently only two smartphone’therefore profound. Additionally, there isn’t a place for sunglasses. Two adults could sit in the backseat, but I would struggle for your front.

Again, the Q8 is more comfortable, and a nice size, however the name suggests a larger vehicle.

Like it or not, the Q8 will be the form of the near future. Its sheet metal conveys a sense of on or off-road sportiness. The Q8 is designed around the driver, too, along with the Q8 could be a great bundle. It seems beautiful inside and out; I love the form and shape of this Q8. It’s stunning and comfortable to sit down in. I don’t enjoy how the Q8 pushes.
