According to Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe, his firm can follow up on its initial two goods (full size SUV and pickup) with smaller models targeted at Chinese and European markets.
So while the R1S SUV will go on sale in Europe come 2022 and China soon after, “what will really drive volume in those markets would be the follow-on goods,” which are smaller and tailored for international customers, clarified Scaringe in a meeting with Reuters.
These smaller EVs, which will nevertheless share crucial components using all the pickup and SUV, will “fit some of those other niches quite well, in particular China,” he said.

“To really scale in those markets because we bring on follow-on goods, obtaining a manufacturing footprint beyond the U.S. will be important. That’s a ways off. ”
“We wouldn’t be seriously interested in building a car firm if we weren’t considering China and Europe as important markets long term,” reasoned the Rivian founder.
The firm ’s first plant in Normal, Illinois has begun pilot production ahead of next year’s debuts, which will include the R1T pickup, R1S SUV and a big electric delivery van for Amazon – the latter built on similar underpinnings since the pickup and SUV.
From now Rivian comes out with smaller models (likely crossovers, since they’d create the most sense), the EV market will be quite cramped because of the likes of Tesla, GM, Ford, in addition to various German manufacturers and many EV startups. Fortunately, there’s even ’s room for everyone.
