Putting solar panels on the roof of an electric car might appear to make sense, but in fact it might not be as effective since you’d think.

As it happens, solar panels don’t generate energy as quickly or as we might have hoped. YouTube’therefore The Tech of Tech placed solar panels on the roof of his own Tesla Model 3 to determine just how much extra range he could receive from sunlight.

The system is a little janky, along with the server would be the first to acknowledge it. But it will give a general idea of just how much electricity a Model 3’s roof might collect if it were covered in solar panels, something which Toyota has tested about the Prius Prime.

The host claims panels are among the best on the current market and although he desires some chunky equipment to trick the system into functioning, it might be made considerably smaller if it were integrated into the car.

After about one hour and a half charging, he gets 7 miles of extra charge. At the sunlight ’therefore height, Tech of Tech’s setup handles to recharge at exactly the exact same speed as a standard wall socket. Others with various setups have discovered it would take as much as 10 days to fully charge a Tesla.

That may not seem all that remarkable, but as power that’s only being generated , it’s pretty cool. And seven miles may easily be the difference between calling a tow truck and getting to the nearest plug.

The server points out, however, his setup costs more than many tows, and that means that you probably aren’t going to figure out to purchase it anytime soon. Moreover, you’re constantly being made to compete with color from trees and clouds and buildings. In the long run, in something which uses as much power as a modern passenger vehicle, the electricity could be spent on conducting auxiliaries.

The host will not point out, however, that in something like that the Aptera 3, a three-wheel EV which appears a bit as a solar racer, it may generate up to 40 miles a day. This may easily cover most of your everyday commuting, which makes solar panels look more interesting.
