1 fisherman and area geek has found the “catch of his life” away from the shore of Daytona Beach at Florida following fishing the doorway of a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule plus 2 parachutes.

Charter boat sailors David Stokes has posted a movie of him embracing his own spectacular grab on YouTube. The Ponce Inlet resident claims he and his friends were out wahoo fishing when a piece of debris caught his attention.

“We had been putting out the baits and caught off the bat using high-speed lures. We high-speed trolled again to the afternoon lure and came around this floating together using up the door bouncing and nobody could figure out what it turned out,” he states . “And we went and I saw the Dragon and me I discovered that it was a Dragon doorway in the parachute. ”

Although his friends insisted they leave the debris behind, Stokes was able to persuade them to turn around and haul it up. It was no easy task to hoist two water-logged parachutes that weighed down the doorway. After 40 minutes of wrestling with their catch, Stokes and his companions finally got it before drifting back into Ponce Inlet using a fish and also the doorway of a spacecraft in hand.

The Dragon name and emblem can be observed to the floating debris, which is apparently the doorway of the parachute compartment of this Dragon capsule. The assembly was part of this in-flight abort test that SpaceX conducted at Cape Canaveral in Florida on January 19.

SpaceX ran a uncrewed safety test that was crucial to ensure that prospective astronauts aboard the Dragon capsule can safely separate from the rocket in the event of an error. Employing the in-flight abort system assembled into the Dragon and its own eight Super Draco motors, the capsule was able to separate in the Falcon 9 without a hitch and then sail to a safe distance prior to the rocket failed an anticipated explosion.

The Dragon deployed its parachutes and pitched to the Atlantic Ocean, where crew were available and prepared to recover the capsule. The SpaceX crew were never able to get the doorway into the parachute compartment, enabling Stokes and his fishing companions to locate the catch of their lives.
