SpaceX Starship launch pad upgraded as Elon Musk reveals rocket production milestone

SpaceX has started to update its South Texas Starship launch pad in expectation of the conclusion of the next rocket prototype, photos of which CEO Elon Musk showed.

Working in parallel with efforts to repair damage brought on by Starship sequential number 1’s (SN1) violent February 28th test collapse, SpaceX has managed to construct, complete, and examine a entirely separate ‘test tank’ and total manufacture of a second full scale Starship in a couple of weeks. Squeezing in alongside efforts to repair the propellant lines that run into the launch bracket, upgrades began on March 24th as a SpaceX staff worked to set up what looked like a remarkably sturdy tripod (with four ‘legs’, of course). Thanks to recognizable testing done with SpaceX’s recent Starship tank prototype, the intention behind the launch mount’s new appendage became apparent.

During the Starship SN2 tank’s push arrangement (‘push puck’, per Elon Musk) test campaign, SpaceX debuted the concurrent usage of a beefy hydraulic port to mimic the forces that a Raptor engine stationary might produce. Capable of producing upward of 200 metric tons (440,000 lbf) of thrust at full capacity, SpaceX will likely start Starship static fire tests with one Raptor engine. Whenever a Starship prototype completes several test fires or one, the plan is to set up three sea level-optimized Raptor motors and replicate static fire tests.

Before that triple-engine inactive fire landmark, a first to the cutting edge Raptor engine, SpaceX should confirm that Starship’s thrust arrangement can stand until the ~600 tons (~1.3M lbf) of drive it will be subjected to during such a test. Sitting on a rack, Starship SN2 utilized a single port and temporary rack to simulate a single engine’s push. Starship SN3, sitting above the floor, will need three jacks to simulate three Raptors.

Therefore, it appears likely that Starship SN3’s first cryogenic tank evidence test – filling the car with inert liquid nitrogen – will coincide with a second dedicated strain evaluation of a Starship push arrangement, ideally demonstrating itself capable of living the force of three Raptor motors at full thrust. While orbital-class Starships will need three more vacuum-optimized Raptor motors, three sea-level motors are SpaceX should start flight tests with prototypes.

Based on an unofficial analysis of photos, it seems that every major structural part of Starship SN3 – excluding legs and fins – is currently nearing conclusion including the ship’s shiny nosecone. Before stated tank segment reaches its height, likely to head into the launch pad for the tests as soon as the tank segment was finished one stacking event stays. Right now, the two of those parts have been transferred into a dedicated Vehicle/Vertical Assembly Building (VAB) and therefore so are probably no more than a couple of days away from becoming united *. Only a day or 2 after that landmark, SpaceX will transfer the rocket to start preparing for the first evidence tests.
