Tesla And NIO Fires Spark Compulsory Safety Checks For All EV Makers In China

Chinese authorities have arranged a range of automobile makers to conduct security checks in their electric vehicles following a recent spate of fires between Tesla and NIO vehicles.

According to CXLive, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the directive on Monday, requiring organizations to test vehicles in inventories and people that have been sold for possible security flaws related to battery boxes, watertight protection, and high-voltage wiring harnesses, and onboard charging devices.

Automobile manufacturers need to submit their findings by the end of October, Yahoo reports.

In April, movie surfaced showing that a Tesla Model S explode and catch fire when sitting at an underground parking lot at Shanghai. This immediately triggered an evaluation from the Californian automobile manufacturer, but findings have yet to be published. Less than one month later, another Model S caught fire whilst sitting at a parking lot at Hong Kong, prompting Tesla to introduce an over-the-air battery applications upgrade to correct battery settings.

More recently, a NIO ES8 SUV caught fire whilst undergoing routine maintenance at an authorized repair center. An evaluation from the electric automaker revealed the fire had been triggered by a battery short circuit.

Last year there have been over 40 fire-related incidents between new-energy automobiles in China and over 130,000 cars were remembered as a result. Not even Audi is immune to fire risks with its brand new e-Tron SUV, because it recently announced a voluntary recall because of a threat that vulnerability can seep into the battery cell by means of a wiring harness glitch and spark a flame.
