Tesla Cybertruck In 2021? Delays Feared After Musk Ghosts Question

The Cybertruck is one of Tesla‘s most anticipated releases so far, but unfortunately, a recent Tweet from Elon Musk has left its production date uncertain. Musk is known for using his Twitter as a way of releasing updates/announcements for what Tesla is doing, including production updates for upcoming products.

Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck back in November 2019, and since then, it’s been a long wait for the futuristic truck to finally go into production. The current plan is to have the tri-motor variant of the Cybertruck start production in late 2021, with that model offering all-wheel drive, over 500 miles of range, 0-60 MPH in under 2.9 seconds, and a towing capacity of over 14,000lbs. That’ll make the Cybertruck one of the fastest and most capable trucks to hit the market, though it all comes at a pretty steep price of $69,900.

Unfortunately, that late 2021 timeline might be in danger of getting delayed. In a Twitter thread about the Cybertruck, Tesla Owners Online Tweeted Musk and asked if the company was “still on time for some delivers later this year.” Musk replied, saying, “Limited production of Model Y this year, high volume next year.” While an update on Model Y availability is good to hear, that’s not at all what Musk was being asked about. Some users followed up by asking Musk to address Cybertruck availability and not the Model Y, but that was the end of Musk’s input on the conversation.

While Musk didn’t come out and say that the Cybertruck is delayed, completely dodging the question like that isn’t a particularly good look. It’s obvious that he was being asked specifically about the Cybertruck and not the Model Y, leading some to believe that all may not be well with the Cybertruck. If it was still on track for release later this year, why wouldn’t Musk have just confirmed that?

While the idea of the Cybertruck getting delayed might be a letdown for some excited customers, it isn’t exactly surprising considering previous Tesla releases. Tesla has become synonymous with missing delivery and production windows for its vehicles. While that’s certainly not the end of the world, it also makes it very easy to believe that Cybertruck production is taking longer than initially expected.

As for what happens next, that all depends on whenever Musk feels like finally addressing Cybertruck availability. In addition to the tri-motor model scheduled for its late 2021 release, Tesla is also creating dual-motor and single-motor variants that should come out in late 2022. For anyone that wants to get their hands on the upcoming truck even with the possibility of a late launch, Tesla is still accepting $100 reservations.
