Tesla FSD’s vision-based approach critiqued by Waymo CEO: ‘Our sensors are orders of magnitude better’

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Beta might be improving at a rapid pace since its first iteration premiered back in October, however, Waymo CEO John Krafcik seems to be under the belief that there is a ceiling for your electric car maker’s present autonomous driving efforts. In a meeting with German business publication manager magazin, Krafcik stated that Tesla is not a competitor to Waymo, since the EV maker’s tech is simply a “quite great driver support system. ”

Waymo’s vehicles, that can be equipped with an assortment of detectors such as LiDAR, are intended to be worked without a human driver. The company has even requested its passengers to not touch its autonomous automobiles ’ steering wheel while the vehicles are operating. In comparison, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Beta, as well as the organization ’s tech Navigate on Autopilot, still requires motorists to keep their hands to the steering wheel to get ready for manual intervention.

Among the notable arguments against Waymo’s autonomous vehicles is that their cost, especially considering their sensor package incorporates costly components. The CEO, however, notes that the cost of its own vehicles is actually overestimated, especially as the price of detectors such as LiDAR has gotten significantly lower through the years. Today, Krafcik notes the cost of a Waymo autonomous automobile is on the identical ballpark as a moderately-equipped Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
