Tesla Launches Full Self-Driving Subscription, Even Though It Is Nowhere Near Achieving Full Autonomy

Tesla has launched its monthly subscription service for its Full Self-Driving package, even though it is still a long way away from offering a true Level 5 fully-self driving package to customers.

The car manufacturer has previously sold its Full Self-Driving package as a $10,000 option but it has now ditched that option in favor of a subscription model. The package is available for $199 per month for new customers or $99 per month for those that had ordered the Enhanced Autopilot package from the factory.

Key features exclusive to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package include the Navigate on Autopilot feature, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon, and Traffic Light and Stop Sign control.

Electrek notes that for Tesla models without the Full Self-Driving computer, an upfront fee of $1,500 is required to upgrade the computer. The monthly subscription can then be purchased.

One of the key appeals of the subscription service is that it can be canceled at any time through the Tesla mobile app, meaning customers don’t have to fork out $10,000 for a system they may rarely use if they can instead subscribe to the Full Self-Driving package only when they need the system, like on a long road trip, for example.

In its release for the subscription, Tesla underlines that “the currently enabled features [of Full Self-Driving] require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
