A Tesla Model 3 owner has submitted a pair of videos on the internet which he asserts show the vehicle’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system avoiding a possible collision.

The footage was recorded by the rear-facing camera near the driver’s side doorway, whereas the front-facing camera caught the near-miss.

As the electrical sedan travels down the highway, a black Chevrolet pickup truck moves past it at the carpool lane. Moments later, the rear-facing camera indicates the Model 3 swerving around the Chevrolet pickup which is now facing in the opposite direction to the stream of traffic. Check out the front-facing camera reveals the driver of the pickup was caught-out by slowing traffic and, even while still trying to emergency brake, the pickup’s back slid out and nearly completed an 180-degree twist.

What’s impressive is just how fast Autopilot was going to respond, though it was really activated. The minute the pickup starts to twist around into the lane occupied by the Tesla, the vehicle steers round the pickup prior to returning to the center of the lane.

We have no doubt an careful driver could have managed to avoid this accident Too, however it’s nice to know that the semi-autonomous system managed this one rather well by itself

This movie, like lots of others between Autopilot, does capture some pretty eye-opening scenes also, if anything, does reveal that Tesla’s driving aid system may not be ideal just yet, however is continuously advancing.
