The Tesla Model 3 Performance has proven itself as a somewhat terrifying force in rallies, following the all-electric sedan fully commanded the 130 class of the Targa West Rally, ending the race nearly 10 minutes before a lineup of fossil fuel-powered competitions. The Model 3 Performance was pushed by Jurgen and Helen Lunsmann, veteran racers who drove the vehicle over four times to finish the 1,000 km race.
Interestingly , the Model 3 Performance, that was racing for West Australian EV charging business Gemtek, is the first all-electric car to dominate the Targa West Rally’s 130 class (130 km/hr rate limited) in such a definitive fashion. So impressive was that the Model 3 Performance that it actually beat the days of cars which were competing in the 165 class, that allowed vehicles to go as quickly as 165 km/hr. The Tesla nevertheless dominated the winner of the 165 class by more than 4 minutes.

In a statement to The Driven, Gemtek co-founder Floian Popp said that the controlling lead of the Model 3 in the Targa West Rally has been a testament to the ability of the all-electric sedan. “This is testament to the acceleration of the Tesla Model 3 Performance Plus,” Popp said. He also expressed his thanks to the efforts of volunteers who assisted the staff perform at its optimal.
Quite frankly, the Model 3 has been supported with a unique mobile charging system made by scientist Jon Edwards. Popp noted that it was pertinent for the team to keep the Model 3’s battery charge above 80%, and so a system with generators plus a Hyundai Kona Electric has been used.
“The important element to the triumph was that we were able to keep battery charge above 80% to almost the entire race, by getting three different mobile chargers,” which we coordinated to be in the right places as the rally progressed more than four times and the 1,000kilometers. Utilizing the Hyundai Kona ‘Electron Transfer Vehicle’ to quickly charge at stage begins, then piled this up on generators created us quite nimble and able to find the electrons in which they were needed.

“Our team of volunteers utilized GPS trackers to know where the race car and vehicles and have been in relation to one another. Turning gear on 5 minutes before coming to let it go through startup procedures (eg that the Tritium Veefill) gave us critical minutes during the quick paced itinerary,” the Gemtek co-founder stated.
This was not the first time the Lunsmann’s Tesla Model 3 Performance fully dominated a competition. Back in August, the all-electric sedan won at the Targa South West rally’s 130 class. This was despite the Lunsmann’therefore slowing down their driving at some stage because they had been so far ahead of their competitors.
