Tesla Model 3 test drives in Shenzhen paused after customer crashes first unit

Tesla set out to take out the perception that electric automobiles are slow, dull vehicles which are no more special than golf carts. The company accomplished their goal with the first Tesla Roadster, the Model S, Model X, and today, the Model 3. Even though Tesla’s automobiles there is overlooked — it takes a skillful and responsible driver to take care of the power provided by the firm automobiles.

This point was emphasized in Shenzen, China. Tesla is anticipated to start deliveries of the Model 3 in the Asian nation, and to help prepare reservation holders and clients for the sedan’s coming. Just as proposed by Elon Musk to the United States, the test drive units that were initially sent to China were Model 3 Performance, the best tier variant of the electric sedan that’s known for being quite fast, whether in straight-line acceleration or about a track. Regrettably, one test driver in Shenzen, China proved to be unprepared for the power of the Model 3 Performance.

As shared by Tesla owner-enthusiast JayinShanghai on Twitter, the Model 3 test driver ended up crashing the electric sedan. An image of a short clip of the car following the collision, as well as the vehicle, showed the damage to the front of the car. While Tesla has not revealed the specifics of the episode, the damage incurred by the Model 3 Performance suggests that the automobile might have crashed into a rod.

Due to the crash, Model 3 test drives in Shenzen were ceased, at least until a different test unit could be shipped to the region. Luckily, the wait for a second Model 3 test drive automobile was short. According to Tesla enthusiast Kelvin Yang on Twitter, reports have emerged stating another Model 3 Performance was shipped to Shenzen as a replacement for its stunt evaluation drive unit. Contrary to the red sedan that has been ruined from the episode, Shenzen’s new Model 3 Performance test drive automobile was painted black and armed with 19″ Power Sports Wheels.

Without missing a beat, Tesla has started taking appointments for test drives in the vehicle. In a subsequent update, Yang noted that the new Model 3 test drive automobile is fully booked, together with interested customers needing to wait for an average of more than two hours for their turn.

Tesla’s quick response to its damaged Model 3 test drive component in Shenzen is remarkable. By sending an additional test drive unit to the city considering that deliveries in the country are to start, the company showed a significant amount of competence with its own logistics. This, if any, bodes well for its forthcoming Model 3 deliveries in the area.

Contrary to the Tesla Model S P100D along with the Model X P100D, the Model 3 Performance is not outfitted with a dedicated feature that optimizes it to acceleration. Instead, the Model 3’s best variant utilizes the raw power of its double electric motors, which create a combined 450 hp and also 471 lb-ft of torque. The Model 3 Performance lives up to its moniker, with its 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, its top speed of 155 mph, along with its range of 310 miles per charge. The car can be equipped with a Track Mode feature, which maximizes the automobile for intensive driving around a racetrack.
