The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested that Tesla recall some of its Model S and Model X automobiles. This is a result of an internal display issue that can lead to loss of the rearview camera and other security features.  If the issue does result in a recall from Tesla, it will not be the very first moment.

Even the Model X and Model Y were subject to suspension issues that in certain instances caused the wheel to detach in the vehicle entirely — a very serious issue that caused many owners to feel concerned for their security. In addition to this, Tesla has come under fire before for issues concerning its full-self driving attribute, such as an collision which caused many to question the potential of AI-assisted driving. The business has been also placed under scrutiny for life-threatening issues, such as the caliber of its own tires .

This newest issue brings forth a difficulty characterized by the NHTSA which has to do with the inner display in the Model S and Model X. The issue has caused the media control unit (MCU) display in the car to go out. This means losing the video feeds of this rearview camera or lane watch camera when driving. It is a significant security issue that could cause an accident and puts both the driver and other road users at risk.

When investigating the MCU appeared to be experiencing failure it had been found that the Tesla versions experiencing the difficulty were equipped with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor integrated using an 8GB eMMc NAND flash memory device. This flash memory performs Program-Erase cycles and after subjecting itself around 3,000 P/E cycles that the device gets obsolete. In turn, this induces the MCU display to go out leading in several issues for your car or truck. While the most dangerous problem is that the aforementioned loss of rearview and lane watch cameras, it might also lead to the loss of inside visual and sound indications such as turn signals, driver feeling, as well as vehicle alerts such as staying charge amounts and tire pressure.

Fortunately the problem has been pinpointed to pick Model S vehicles made from 2012- 2018 and Model X vehicles made from 2016-2018. Although this is a great number of vehicles from both version lines, newer versions aren’t experiencing the matter. The flash memory device can be replaced, however, Tesla has yet to suggest whether this can spark a recall. This means the repair cost will come out of the client’s pocket. Given that the anticipated life of the flash memory device is between 5-6 decades many owners of the previous models may be coming upon the demand for replacements quite soon.
