Tesla Model X owner showcases DIY automatic lifting frunk

Brian previously shared his own solution that could let his Model 3’s hood to lift automatically if it’s opened from the Tesla program or the electrical car’s 15″ touchscreen, and this week he also applied that same technique to his Model X.

The procedure is quite straightforward, as he disclosed last year with his Model 3. After removing some high cover bits hiding entry to the mechanics, a retaining clip has to be pried off until popping the stock struts off. Subsequently, the new gas struts are set up by popping them into the slots left from the Model X’therefore first pieces. Brian also substituted the spring at the frunk locking mechanism to reduce the force required to lock it again.

With this replacement, the Model X frunk opens completely after the electronic unlocking mechanism included by Tesla is activated instead of requiring further individual aid to start out of a semi-closed position. It should be noticed that the frunk doesn’t close automatically. Brian also noticed in the movie that the more rigorous struts did require some extra force to shut the frunk than using the stock parts because of their own being 140 lb struts, that can be a bit more powerful than the inventory versions. But a two-handed method of final functions with no issues, and Brian had multiple relatives successfully attempt it.

The parts used for Brian’s newest Tesla mod had been 2 StrongArm 4882 Lift Supports Struts Shocks out of Amazon, along with a gentle close spring out of Lowes measuring 3/8″ x 2″ x .35″. The struts recorded go for about $40 for the pair on Amazon, along with the spring price around $2. Upon completion of the strut adjustment, the Model X’s frunk fit and finish afterwards was exactly the same as it had been from the mill.
