Tesla patents custom cooling system for longer-lasting energy storage devices

A significant portion of Tesla’s company relies heavily on the durability and longevity of its own battery packs, also in the soul of disruptive innovation, the Silicon Valley-based company has continued to make improvements for its own battery technologies to make them more durable and more effective. Tesla managed to achieve this. 

It is pertinent for battery packs, and especially those that are utilized for energy storage, so to be strong enough that they endure for a very long moment. To achieve this, battery packs need to have the ability to deal with multiple charge and discharge cycles on a normal basis. They must likewise have the ability to weather flaws in the machine, including those who may cause damage to the actual cells in the pack.

Such a method was outlined by Tesla at a patent only titled “Energy Storage System. ” Explaining its own rationale, the Silicon Valley-based company said that “cells and other elements in a pack generate heat during surgery, either during the charging process to put away the energy and during the discharge process when energy is consumed. ” Tesla further explains that “if the cells fail, they release gases that are hot. These gases may cause significant damage to the cells which have not failed and may affect the integrity of other cells in the pack. ”

With this in mind, Tesla maintains that there is a requirement to develop an energy storage system” that’ll be capable of reducing or removing “one or more of the problems mentioned. ” Tesla’s patent refers to two strategies that may improve its own battery packs. One of these involves the usage of a publication system which uses a cold plate, which could help remove heat generated by the battery pack during usage. Heat pipes may also be used using a cold plate to achieve this objective. 

“In certain embodiments, a cold plate (which offers liquid cooling) may be in thermal relation to the battery cells 100 to remove heat generated during system usage. The cold plate could possibly be with the battery cells 100 or, alternatively, a couple of layers and/or characteristics may be between the cold plate and the battery cells 100. The battery cells 100 are in contact with a couple of heat pipes to get rid of heat disposed beneath the battery cells. A cold plate can be disposed beneath the heat pipe or plumbing (on the side of the heat pipe away from the battery cells 100) which helps dissipate the heat found in the heat pipe. ”

“In certain embodiments, the cold plate could possibly be in thermal contact with one side of these cells with no heating pipes. The cold plate could consist of a plate or plates which are linked to the cells and/or another. In other embodiments, a couple of heat pipes have been disposed between the battery cells 100 plus a cold plate can be disposed beneath the battery cells 100. The cold plate and the heat pipes could possibly be together in thermal link. ”

Apart from the usage of dishes, Tesla described that a battery pack with areas which are intended to give way when mechanical failures happen. By employing such a method, the majority of the cells in a battery pack secure when a few cells were to fail. 

“The top plate comprises a couple of weak areas over the more or one battery mobile. The weak areas are regions that have ethics and thus, where failure is more likely to happen whether gasoline is released by a battery mobile. Tesla’s revolve around battery ethics in its patent application suggests that the Silicon Valley-based company is seeking to develop packs which are capable of lasting a very long moment. Improvements are teased before, especially in a paper published by Tesla lead crystal researcher Jeff Dahn and associates of this Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University. The cells described in the newspaper have been able to lasting over 1 million kilometers on the road, or 20 years if used in energy storage. 

Considering the initiatives, in addition to the battery pack contingencies outlined in the patent, it appears that Tesla is building up towards making an ecosystem of products which are capable of lasting decades. This, of course, plays a part in pushing Tesla’s overall goal of accelerating the advent of renewable energy.
