Tesla poised to streamline China’s Model Y production with next-gen casting machine

It appears that Tesla China is making the necessary preparations to adopt a streamlined production process for its Model Y, and possibly even the Model 3, at Gigafactory Shanghai. Signs of such a strategy has been recently revealed in a drone flyover by Tesla enthusiast Wuwa Vision, that managed to capture pictures of an expansion into the Phase 1 building’s entire body stamping place.

The tail end of Gigafactory Shanghai Phase 1 is widely deemed to be allotted for body stamping activities. The section has been completed along with the rest of the Phase 1 construction last year until the building of the Phase 1.5 zone (a battery and powertrain assembly centre ) started. Interestingly enough, the current drone flyover indicates that employees are expanding the entire body stamping area.

What’therefore the structure in your system stamping workshop entails what appeared to be deep excavations, implying that the place will soon be hosting a huge machine, or a minumum of one that’s larger than the ones used at the present Model 3 line. Patents out of Tesla and announcements out of CEO Elon Musk have hinted at a procedure –one that can very well revolutionize the Model Y’therefore production in China.

Interestingly enough, the enormous casting machine seems to be going into the Phase 1 construction, which will be believed to be allocated only for the Model 3. The motives behind his’ve been revealed by Tesla, although it’s plausible the brand new casting machine may also be used for its Model 3’therefore generation. Otherwise, this may imply that the Model Y may begin production from the Phase 1 area, at least until Phase 2A is finish. Such a strategy would enable Tesla to begin generating the crossover regardless of the phase of Gigafactory 3’s buildout continuing.

Many wonder what the foundation next to the workshop would be. Construction started in Jan.. Earlier, Elon talked single piece casting, causing me to speculate because being prepped for its 4K-ton casting machine, the largest in the 31, abt this expansion site. Last Julya patent application from Tesla was printed that pointed into a giant casting machine’s utilization for the generation of electrical vehicles. The new casting machine will feature a central hub to get prior to being cast, several dies that are assembled into portions of a vehicle frame. The patent, in a way, reflected Elon Musk’s remarks during his appearance at the Ride the Lightning podcast, in which he discussed a number of the production improvements at the Model Y.

“There are several manufacturing improvements to the [Model] Y. The rear underbody we’re moving into a aluminum…casting instead of a run of stamped aluminum and steel bits. As soon as we get the casting machine, it’ll go having a decrease in capital expenditure on all the robots to put those parts together,” Musk said.

Musk has mentioned this huge casting machine multiple times, for example in his recent appearance at the Third Row Podcast, by which he mentioned the idea was amusingly motivated by a diecast Tesla Model S in his desk. Talking about his thought process, Musk noted he believed the Model S diecast “doesn’t charge much, and it appears pretty comprehensive. ” Thushe believed it may be a good concept to “make this larger. ”

The Model Y’s large casting equipment and its consequences have been teased in the continuing teardown of the automobile from veteran Sandy Munro. When compared with the Model 3, the Model Y’therefore casts are larger, and the entire body of the vehicle looks far more elegant. With a method set up, Tesla would have the ability to create the Model Y at a more effective way. This is extremely valuable for Tesla, because the Model Y is poised to be its most high-volume automobile nonetheless, with Musk saying that the crossover would likely outsell the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 united.
