Tesla poised to unlock vehicle-to-grid abilities with ‘bi-directional’ charging systems

It appears that Tesla is creating up to the ultimate release of car to grid (V2G) features for its fleet. Hints of the technology could be understood from the codes inside the company’s vehicles, in addition to the current findings of Cruise Staff fleet Reliability Engineer Marco Gaxiola, that happened to carry out an investigation of Tesla’s electrical car charger for your Model 3. 

For the most part, Tesla has been pretty silent about its intentions to roll out a car to grid feature for its fleet. Vehicle to grid features aren’t brand new in the EV world class. The Nissan Leaf, one of the first mainstream cars, had this feature, though its V2G technologies could be utilized more like a manual power source. This created the Leaf’so V2G solutions. But when V2G is taken at scale, and even when vehicles are in communicating with the energy grid, then things become a whole great deal more persuasive. 

Back in 2015, Tesla CTO JB Straubel noticed that once there are several million Teslas on the road, the fleet may have controllable loading capacity. This milestone was reached recently by Tesla, with the company generating its millionth vehicle, a reddish Model Y Performance, earlier this season. And believing that Tesla is taking in the mainstream market with the Model Y and Model 3, there’s a good probability that the rise of its fleet would accelerate through the years. If Tesla had been to roll outside V2G attributes because of its cars, now, or even the near future, would be a preferable time to perform it. 

But this is not all. At a recent statement to Electrek, Cruise Staff fleet Reliability Engineer Marco Gaxiola noticed that the Model 3’s charger gets the necessary technologies to enable bidirectional charging features. Gaxiola came following a deep dive on the Model 3 charger. “What I heard on reverse engineering the Model 3 charger, was that the layout is bidirectional. This means power can be converted from AC to DC the identical way as the example, but in addition power can stream coming out of the battery and ending up on the AC side,” he told the publication.

In a following LinkedIn post, the Cruise engineer noted that Tesla will probably have the ability to roll out its own V2G features to its fleet through a software upgrade. As they could actually sell a few of their vehicles ’ power back, this may open up a lot of chances for car owners.
