Tesla to begin $10 monthly “premium connectivity” subscription plan for popular in-car features

Tesla will begin charging a $9.99 monthly fee for its “superior connectivity” net package, beginning on January 1, 2020. The upgrade will impact Model S, Model X, and Model 3 owners that bought on or after July 1, 2018 and take effect on January 1, 2020.

Tesla owners have been informed via email early Saturday morning of the upcoming shift that would end their free access to automobile features, such as live traffic visualization, satellite-view maps, along with in-car video streaming services such as Netflix and Youtube (if not linked to Wi-Fi.)

Buyers taking delivery of Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus vehicles will be extended a free trial of Premium Connectivity.

Tesla’s latest notification makes good on a guarantee first communicated in July of 2018, when the electric carmaker announced that influenced owners would be provided a totally free 1-year trial of Premium Connectivity.

Now eighteen months after the company’s announcement of a Premium Connectivity plan, features that drivers accustomed to will just available beneath a subscription plan and have been primed on.

Though the latest upgrade of a subscription plan that is paid may come with mixed opinions among owners, it must come as no surprise .

Tesla mentioned as far back as 2013 in its own shareholder letter that Model S buyers would acquire completely free data connectivity and radio for four decades and could be billed “for extreme data usage. ”

“To further enhance the driver expertise, fresh Model S customers will now receive data and internet radio. As an extra advantage to our present Model S customers, the year period begins on January 1, 2014. To be fair to all, in rare instances, a client could be charged for data usage. ”

Tesla vehicles depend on carrier networks, for example AT&T from the United States, to give its vehicles with cellular internet connectivity. At the face of carrier costs as a result of large volume creation and deliveries, being able to foot the bill on such as scale gets cost-prohibitive. In a business with anxieties to appease investors who profitability is achievable.
