Tesla’s already approved project in Santa Monica will allow the electrical automaker to open a massive 62 stall V3 Supercharger along Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles hit a speed bump before this week. After being accepted by the City Commission on March 3rd, a followup meeting on March 9th proved that the two lots Tesla planned to use to the new Supercharger project are being included in an Emergency Interim Zoning Ordinance for possible housing in Los Angeles.

Santa Monica’s V3 Supercharger Project

Tesla applied to possess 62 V3 Supercharging stalls situated at 1401 and 1421-1425 Santa Monica Boulevard, which was declared on March 3rd. The project would bring Tesla’s fastest electric car chargers in massive quantities to Santa Monica. The City Council approved the construction and subsequent operation of a 62 stall “recharging facility with solar power systems, restrooms, and support equipment divide between two project sites. ”

The acceptance solidified the fact this would be the largest V3 Supercharger facility on earth, as the current largest all-V3 Supercharging station can be found at Firebaugh, California, but just has 56 stalls. Moreover, the largest Tesla Supercharger station on earth is the 72 stall Shangahi Supercharging Facility at China, but the chargers are just V2, that don’t charge as rapidly as V3.

City Council halts the Santa Monica V3 Supercharger Project

Concerns arose from some City Council members that projected worries concerning Los Angeles housing circumstances. Even though LA houses 3.967 million individuals, there are simply not enough apartments or condos in the region, and the City intends to develop new housing locations for people to reside in. However, Councilors advocated that they aren’t in favor of displacing existing housing to create brand new buildings, complicating the living situations of those residents who now occupy the buildings.

Because of this, City Council enacted an Emergency Interim Zoning Ordinance which would effectively reserve unoccupied lots for potential housing growth. One of those zones which were considered for buildings was, in actuality, the place where Tesla intended to set up the 62 stall V3 Supercharging station. Because of the ordinance, Tesla may be made to scrap the plans, despite the fact that they’ve already been accepted.

In the end, the project could be postponed for any length of period between 45 days and 2 decades, according to Council members’ recommendations in the language of this Ordinance.
