Tesla said Saturday its Model 3 insides are now completely free from leather, fulfilling a promise made by CEO Elon Musk at this season ’s annual shareholder meeting.
Tesla was closing in on a leather-free interior for a few years now. But a sticking point has been the steering wheel, which Musk made mention of in the company’s shareholder meeting in June in response to a request from PETA activist.
“I believe we were close to having a non-heated steering wheel, so which ’s not leather,” Musk said in the time. “There are some challenges when when heating the material and also how it wears over time. ”
Musk said Model Y and Model 3 would be vegan by 2020. He wasn’t sure whether the company would have the ability to fulfill with that same target for the Model S and X.

Activist bankers made a proposal in 2015 which Tesla no more utilize leather in the insides of its vehicles from 2019. Even though stockholders rejected that proposal, Tesla did begin rolling out “vegan” interior elements in its cars.
The company started by offering seats as an option. Two years back, Tesla made the synthetic material standard in its own Model 3, Model X and Model S vehicles.
