Tesla’s developments in the intelligence arena are one of the most significant elements of its current and future technology, and this also involves adapting networks to different hardware platforms. A recent patent publication titled “System and Method for Adapting a Neural Network Model On a Hardware Platform” gives a bit of insight to how the electric automobile maker is taking on the challenge.

Generally, a neural network is a group of algorithms designed to collect data and understand patterns. The particular data being accumulated is based upon the platform involved and what sort of data it may send into the community, i.e., cameras/image information, etc.. Differences between platforms imply differences in the neural network algorithms, and adapting them is some time consuming for developers. Just as apps need to be programmed to work dependent on the operating system or hardware on a telephone or tablet, as an instance, so also do networks. Tesla’s answer to the adaptation difficulty is automation (obviously ).

Through the adaptation process of a network to specific hardware, decisions have to be produced by means of a software developer based on available choices. Each of these choices normally requires hardware instruction , investigation, and impact evaluation, with every set of options chosen, eventually adding up to use. Tesla’s application calls these choices “decision factors,” and they’re a very important part of their invention works.

According to the application, after plugging for variation in a network design and the hardware system data, software code traverses the network to learn in which the decision points are runs the hardware parameters from those factors to offer configurations. More importantly, the software method examines the hardware constraints (for instance, processing resources and performance metrics) and creates setups for your neural network which will meet the prerequisites for it to operate properly. In the application:

“In order to generate a concrete implementation of an abstract neural network, numerous implementation choices about at least one of system’s data layout, numerical accuracy, algorithm selection, data padding, accelerator use, stride, and much more could be produced. These conclusions might be produced on a per-layer or per-tensor basis, so that there can be countless more, or choices, to create for a particular network. Embodiments of the invention consider many variables into consideration as configurations aren’t supported by underlying hardware or software platforms, before implementing the network, and configurations will cause an implementation. ”

Tesla’s invention provides the capacity to show the network configuration data on a graphical interface to make selection and assessment . For example, different configurations could have memory consumption, energy consumption , or different evaluation times. An analogy with this process would be choosing configurations based on differences involving Track Mode and Range Mode but rather for you want your AI to work with your hardware.

This patent application appears to be one of the products of Tesla’so-called acquisition of DeepScale, an AI startup centered on Full Self Driving and designing neural networks for smaller devices. The listed inventor, Dr. Michael Driscoll, was a Senior Staff Engineer for DeepScale prior to committing to a Senior Software Engineer position at Tesla. Prior CEO of DeepScale, Dr. Forrest Iandola, additionally flocked to Tesla as a Senior Staff Machine Learning Scientist prior to moving on to separate study this past year.
