Tesla’s “Standard” safety features for Model 3 and Model Y get an NHTSA update

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has upgraded its site ’s pages for the 2021 Model 3 and Model Y amid the EV maker’s shift into a pure vision approach. As can be found on the security agency’s site, several security characteristics are no longer listed as “Standard” about the 2 automobiles, at least for cars created after April 27, 2021.

Check out the NHTSA security ratings for its Tesla Model 3 and Model Y now shows that the two electric cars do not have forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support listed as “Standard. ” As several reports from Reuters, the security agency’s upgrade was made after Tesla’s elimination of radar due to its two mass-market EVs.

Tesla has apparently briefed the NHTSA about the change in its Model 3 and Model Y manufacturing.

As stated by the agency, it “only includes check marks to the model manufacturing range for cars tested. ” With this in mind, it appears that the NHTSA has not yet conducted specific security tests on Tesla’s vision Model 3 and Model Y. Teslarati has reached out into the NHTSA to get more insight about when and if the security features will be listed as “Standard” in the future, but is yet to be given a response.

It ought to be noted that both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have received 5-Star Safety Ratings in the NHTSA’s crash teststhat the greatest that the agency could give. These ratings remain unaffected regardless of the elimination of forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking, and energetic brake aid, as a portion of their EVs’ “Standard” features.

Tesla’s shift into pure vision for the Model 3 and Model Y is displaying controversial contemplating that radar has played a remarkable part in keeping the business ’s vehicles secure through the years, especially at times when visibility is reduced. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, nevertheless, has remarked on Twitter that a radar-less, pure vision approach will pave the way for greater Autopilot functionality . Musk noted that this would be demonstrated with a pure vision edition of the FSD Beta, which will be expected to be published soon.
