After nine years, Tesla‘s very first Supercharger, located between the Tesla Design Studio and SpaceX Headquarters in Hawthorne, California, will be closing to the public on July 19 – that is, today. The closure notice was noticed by a user on Reddit, who then reported it to Teslarati.
The sign on the Supercharger reads: “This Supercharging location will be closing permanently to the general public on Monday, July 19th. Additional Supercharging sites are located at these nearby locations,” followed by a list of alternative Supercharging stations at a local hotel and store.

Several Tesla owners on the original Reddit post corroborated this by mentioning that the station had been removed from their in-vehicle navigation systems, with one claiming it hadn’t been there for over seven months. It’s not clear exactly what the reason for the closure was, but the original poster spoke to a Tesla Design Studio employee who said it was due to potential security issues. Apparently, the closure request was made directly to Elon Musk himself, who “was a little disappointed, but understands.”

Several users recalled how they enjoyed watching the inner workings of the facilities when they charged there, with some even saying they had seen rocket parts being wheeled by at times.
Nevertheless, it seems that while off-limits to the public, the station will still remain open to employees working at the facilities, although it’s unclear whether that would be implemented physically or though some other means.
